I hated the Slants after I changed cars before the safety rails were later added- after someone was killed. That person was also attempting to change cars. To me, the slanted fronts were also a waste of space. |

As a kid, I thought the Slants were the perfect cars for the E & F express runs. The slanted front just made them seem more important, some how.And I always thought that. I considered it quite sad to see them on the purely local runs - the C, L, W, and so forth. |

The streamlined look of the slant R40s was very attractive. But not very practical.I first saw one on the F at Lexington Av-53rd St. station. I wonder if the streamlining actually functioned to reduce the piston effect of the train in the tunnel under East River. |

If I were KING, but I'm not, I would have divorced 100 pairs of the R40M's and an equal number of the last R40 slants and created mixed marriages so as to produced something like/======)(======)+(======)(======\ and the occasional R42 /======)(======)+{======}{======}+(======)(======\ if I were King. Same thing with those two SOCA Cars. The result would only make them appear to be aero dynamic! |
