Let me guess - that R-10 led a train of R-12/14s.:)

The first train of 100 R-40's with the straight or modified ends began service today on the "F"

The modified ends were so handsome, and the slant ends were so ugly, even as delivered.

They are good looking and must have been very forward looking in 1969.
But I don’t think slants are ugly at all.

Guess that it's a matter of taste. I hated the Slants after I changed cars before the safety rails were later added- after someone was killed. That person was also attempting to change cars. To me, the slanted fronts were also a waste of space.

As a kid, I thought the Slants were the perfect cars for the E & F express runs. The slanted front just made them seem more important, some how.

And I always thought that. I considered it quite sad to see them on the purely local runs - the C, L, W, and so forth.

I remember seeing them on the W going to Astoria. Very impressive looking making that slow 90 degree turn from QBP towards 39/Beebe.

I agree. The streamlined look of the slant R40s was very attractive. But not very practical.

I first saw one on the F at Lexington Av-53rd St. station. I wonder if the streamlining actually functioned to reduce the piston effect of the train in the tunnel under East River.

I remember when the slants were new. Even my sister liked them, and she is definitely not a subway buff.

If I were KING, but I'm not, I would have divorced 100 pairs of the R40M's and an equal number of the last R40 slants and created mixed marriages so as to produced something like

/======)(======)+(======)(======\ and the occasional R42

/======)(======)+{======}{======}+(======)(======\

if I were King.

Same thing with those two SOCA Cars.

The result would only make them appear to be aero dynamic!

I work on Whitehall Street. I could easily hear the sounds of the Slant Ws terminating there, from street level.

I loved the R-40 Slants. As a young pre-teen, they were my favorite cars along with the WF R-33/36s.
