Only ones I knew about when I lived in Brooklyn was Utica Av and Empire Blvd (which surprisingly is still there)And Atlantic Av & either Norwood St (which is now a McDonald's) or Logan St (Wendy's). I know it was west of the junction with Conduit. No subway terminals near either, the Atlantic is a block away from the J/Z. Maybe if the Utica Av line had been built, there would be a station near Empire Blvd (next logical stop after an Eastern Parkway station to connect to IRT, or if it was an IRT route, the next station after Utica.) Fuck Robert Moses! 😡 |

Down here in South FloriDUH, some (not all) of the McDonald's have disabled the kiosks as a COVID measure (the one I frequent that still has them working is in Palm Beach county (maybe things are different up there). Every Wal-Mart I go to has self-checkout, some more than others. Only thing I hate is the cheap-ass bags which are almost impossible to open. Pre-COVID, I would moisten my fingers to help get the bag open, obviously that's not an option now. Every once in awhile I get lucky and get a register where the bags open easily. I've noticed that the grey bags are generally easier to deal with than the white bags, alas, the former are in short supply. |

It wasn’t and White Castle sued and eventually White tower went out of business and some of their stores formed a company called “My-T-Burger” which believe is also no longer around. There was also a White Tower in the old bus terminal at 168 St/Bway prior to the opening of the GWB bus terminal. A genuine White Castle I remember was on 92 St in the short block between 4 and 5 Aves in Bay Ridge Bkln and they made a lot of money off the train crews working the 4 Av (R/RR) lcl. |

I was in the class of 1975 (4th ever graduating class for JDHS, IIRC). Was only there the one school year 74-75. Previous 3 years I went to HS in Urbana, IL, while my mother was in graduate school at thre University of Illinois. Great school for a subway buff. The West End on one side, the Sea Beach on the other side, yard leads from the West End on the north side, and the south side, the West End rising up from surface to the elevated, plus a 8-track layup yard that came right up to the gate. 2 tracks for each of the four lines (Sea Beach, Brighton, Culver and West End) in the same order east to west as Stillwell Terminal. Seeing them there while standing on the ground made you realize how tall subway cars are. When you are riding, the platform is a few feet off the ground, to the top of the car isn't terribly taller than you are. And an elevated, you are too far away to get the perspective. The fun part was seeing the layups after the morning rush. The Sea Beach, Brighton and West End tracks were somewhat predictable (Sea Beach R-32, maybe an occasional R-42 or R-27/30; Brighton was mostly R-27/R-30 as I rarely saw a D there, just Ms and QBs; West End almost always R-32s, maybe an occasional R-42 or a R-10 from north spending the midday there. But Culver--you could see an Arnine, R-38, R-40 (Slant, never saw a Modified, but it was possible) and R-44 (I think the R-46 were just starting to go in service when I graduated). |

I will add that also that the onions and pickles placed on their patties gave the White Tower burgers, at least to me, gave a bit more satisfying meal.As for that former White Tower location at 207th Street and Broadway in Inwood, which was replaced by that similar operation you mentioned, the entire building where it was housed, along with other businesses, was burned and destroyed in a fire some years ago. At one point it went out of business, and due to the increasing Latin-American population of the neighborhood new owners bought the building, painted it brown and renamed it “Spanish Castle.” |
