SEPTA Route 100 Eliminating Stop Request Lights

Effective Dec 7th, the unique stop request system where passengers press a button to request a car to make a station stop is being eliminated. Cars will now be required to proceed through stations at 15mph and stop if a passenger is visible. Previously cars were able to proceed through empty stations at track speed.

Great way to increase wear and tear on the cars, slow down average speed, and discourage certain ridership patterns.

BTW, the Newark City Subway was also request stop during PCC car days. Used to fly past stations like Davenport Avenue, Park Avenue and even Warren Street all the time.

I bet the buttons confused people.
The car request light system worked well, people understood to activate the light.The light was visible to the operator well before the station so he/she could slow down and stop.

I've seen well to do people freak out and not able to figure out a doorbell. I've seen people in the ghetto not know how to shut a door.

Either that or a bulb blew out at some lightly used inbound station at night thereby "stranding" a passenger?

All it takes is one nasty letter or a politician getting involved and PRESTO, a forever policy get changed.

Here comes passenger complaints of hard stops, with the shop now dealing with flat wheels and excessive brake shoe wear.

But what the hell, when a SEPTA rail vehicle over runs a station, they put it in reverse anyway right back to the platform.

If it is a temporary measure I could see the lack of ridership from COVID causing the trains to run significantly early.

I doubt there will be much of a problem with brake shoe wear since most likely the new SEPTA cars on the line have dynamic or regenerative braking unlike the Bullets which did not.

It doesn't. A bit of computer logic to smooth out the operator banging the controller back and forth would help. Everyone bitches about 'these stupid computer controlled trains', half of the computer code is probably there to stop the guy behind the controller from braking the equupment...

I'm 78, and nothing surprises me, either. I have worked with some pretty unusual people.
The thing that I remember vividly, was my stint in semi-trailer business . We were in Eagle, Pa. and had satellite plant in Lebanon ,Pa. A courier brought things down from the Lebanon plant to us. HIs name was Lester, he had the worst BO , ever. It was tough to be close to him, his BO left an oder in the staircase even 10 minutes after he left.

Would not surprise me:

I had one incident where a driver did not see a woman waiting for a bus when it was dark and she subsequently ran to where he did stop and let the drive have it for so long he had to stop and get cops to deal with her. I suspect something similar happened here.
