Truth be Told

Posted by Train Dude on Sun Aug 9 23:05:14 2020

After almost 10 years on the sidelines, I still miss the job. Not the silly stuff we talk about here but the day to day 'keeping things running' even when the shit is falling down all around you.

Yep. I hear ya. It gets in your blood. It wasn't just a job, it was a career. Just because you move on with your life dosen't mean that the lifelong hands on need for a sense of accomplishment (on more days than not) that went along with a decent paycheck and getting your hands dirty that came along with the job suddenly vanishes.

After 30 years or so, its hard to let go. Many of your friends came from the job. 1/3 of my social media is job related. Even my dreams (10 years out) are still about the job.

Before Transit I was a teacher and an electronics tech. When I decided I wanted neither, my wife said to find a job that I will love. I was fascinated with trains as a child and transit became my dream job. I had the largest set of electric trains to play with every day and was paid very well for the privilege. I remember my instructor in RCI school telling me, “Don’t ever let them know how much you love this job because they’ll make you do it for free.” I never did it for free but it got to the point where if I didn’t leave, I’d be paying them to work.

One of my former coworkers who retired as a T/O once mentioned to me that the difference between us was that while I had a career, he had a job. He was so cynical about everything it’s surprising he stayed long enough to retire and collect his pension.

You did the right thing. Most people are chained to jobs they dislike at best, hate at worst, because they have dependents, a mortgage, etc. At 76 I was out this afternoon looking at a small potential job. we will correct inconveniences and a couple of hazards in a penthouse built on the cheap (but not priced that way). Aside from a stellar view of SF Bay, they are 2 blocks from the UP (former SP) mainline through Oakland which hosts San Joaquins, Capitol Corridor trains, and the Amtrak Coast Starlight as well as freights.

Had to resurrect the handle to respond to this. I finally got 'in' but not at NYCT. 5 years in though and I already have plenty of war stories about keeping this duct-taped, tack-welded mess called public transit together.

I retired in June of last year. Just last Friday, one of my former coworkers emailed me a question on a computer program that I had developed years ago. When I was able to answer his question, it gave me great satisfaction - but not enough to make me think that retirement was the wrong decision!

Five full eight hour days are demanding, especially I would think in Rapid Transit Operations.

Eight hour days were usually 10 or 12 hours. Equipment problems, material problems, budget problems and even people problems all take time. Then of course, there's always politics.

"we will correct inconveniences and a couple of hazards in a penthouse built on the cheap"

Isn't this standard now? I've yet to see anything new that didn't have people working on fixes right after. I see these old pictures in black and white of skyscrapers when they were new or banks. And I wonder if when they were built, if it was actually completely back then unlike today.

I can see where you're coming from. I've worked for a non-Transit, non-MTA NYS Agency for 27 years and counting.

Even though I get frustrated with work sometimes, when I finally do log off my work computer for the last time, the adjustment will be a major one.

In addition to talking about trains, I really enjoy actual gardening. I suggest trying it out, if you haven't already!!

Iampissed that the place was badly enough wired to have actual code violations. In general the BAY Area isnot known for corrupt building inspectors, although lazy certainly is common.
Example. in the poenthouse in question a light on the ceiling of the shower stall is NOT protected by the required GFI.
