Stopped Train Rolling

Posted by Express Rider on Tue Aug 11 09:58:23 2020

Arrgh!
I was just reading the post which stated why a stopped train could start rolling (wanted to copy & paste to a WORD doc which is why I was searching for it.) and now cannot locate it.

Does anyone have more info. on this post or a link? or provide more info on why a stopped train could start rolling? Thanks.

Summer of 1970 I was on an R-9 (D or an F) at 34th & 6th, doors open at the platform when it started rolling as people were going to get on and off. Probably mid after noon, at the very beginning of the rush hour. No one on the platform or train moved towards the doors. No one was injured.

That would cause an opposite effect I would believe.

Happens from my observation when a T/O is posting northbound at Prospect Park. Downgrade leaving the station. After stop T/O release a little air that turns into too much and we start to roll while the doors are open.
Interlock with the door controls stops T/O from taking power, nothing stops him from releaseing brakes and showing how gravity works.

You're welcome.

Please be careful about giving out too much information about the rolling train that you observed at 34 St. Even though it was 50 years ago, there are some spies on this site who could make trouble for the motorman involved.

did it roll about 1 foot, or maybe 5 feet? Or more?

Not at this point assuming that M/M is even still alive but in any case, he is definitely retired..

That sounds a bit odd for 34/6. when I was a M/M it was common practice on AMUE equipment to release all the air just as the train was coming to a stop since on level track, prewar cars with friction bearings would usually not roll. There were certain stations that were on a grade where you did have to hold a brake like 145 St upper level on the A/AA. Postwar equipment had roller bearings so it became necessary to always hold a slight brake even on level track.

It's not a flat station.

There's enough of a grade that if the T/O lets off the same amount of brake as he or she would at a flat station, the train will roll.

On an R-32, holding about 15 of straight air on a flat station should work. On a grade, at least 20 of straight air.

I was twenty that summer. So I'm sure he was probably older and is now retired, unless he has gone to that great 207, or CI in the sky.

You are or were (if retired?) a TO/motorman?

It rolled a lot more than 5 feet; maybe close to one car length, or between one & two car lengths (@ 60 feet per car). I was inside the car, looking out at through the doors that were already opened to the platform. People were about to get on and off when the train started rolling.

Although it’s not a flat station, the middle of the station dips in such a way that a full length train balances so it shouldn’t move. I operated R-1/9s there many times including 6 car KKs and never had a problem with the train rolling.

6 cars will balance different than full length.

True, but considering the gradient of 34/6 the longer train would probably be less likely to roll than a long train. As a V/R M/M I operated trains of all lengths through that station.

Many here are jealous of the equipment you got to operate.
