And on a non transit personal note; on this day 2011 I retired from Metro North after a 38 year career of continuous employment in railroad industry. I think I was about 6 months behind your "pin pulling". We were lucky to get out when we did!

My recollection is that the M9 bus terminated by Klein's in USQ and was still using old buses into the early 60s, and Mack buses long after they were gone from everywhere else. I vaguely recall newer buses when I went to Stuy in the late 60s.

Jim: I retired on October 27, 2009. I stated under Conrail. You must have gone back to Penn Central. I had 31 years. It was a long and interesting run.

Yep, 3/11/73 under Penn Central.

You left on Oct 27? The opening date of the IRT subway opening IIRC.
What a coincidence!

"S. Klein on the Square." Union Square, that is. I believe 4th Ave. between 14th and 15th.

Klein's was across 14 St from Mays and on the east side of Bway. The store actually consisted of several buildings that were “connected” by breaking down the walls between them which is why to go from one part of the store to another you would have to walk up or down a few steps. The May's store was originally Orbach's before that store moved tom 34 St.

Isn't that where Nordstrom Cellar is now, and the best buy upstairs? Or whatever is there now since nothing ever lasts in that space?

I don't recall that name. I was '71. And since my name is Fisher I'd have remembered.

The S. Klein site is presently occupied by Zeckendorf Towers. Which is where the subway escalators all are.

That means the Triborough Bridge had just recently opened when my grandfather visited New York in October of 1936. He took a photo of it as he was being driven across it.

Best Buy is at the SW corner of 14th and 4th Ave.

Zeckendorf Towers, formerly Klein's, is at the NE corner of the same intersection.

Mays was south of 14th and west of Broadway. Klein's was north of 14th and east of 4th Ave. Not quite across from each other.
