Streetcars had been run by the Third Avenue Railway Company. Bus service will be operated by the Avenue B & East Broadway Transit Corporation as the M-9. Source: New York Division Bulletin /November 2001, article by Mr. Bernard Linder Tuscarora Almanac – July 31, 1936 – The Book of Last Runs Astoria, New York New York City Department of Docks Service is discontinued on the East River ferry between Astoria, Queens and East 92nd Street, Manhattan. The ferry had been rendered superfluous by the completion of the Tribrough Bridge on July 11, 1936. The final run was made by the ferryboat ROCKAWAY. The ROCKAWAY was built in 1925 as the MURRAY HULBERT. She would remain in municipal service until 1966. The Astoria Ferry had been run from 1850 to 1918 by the Astoria Ferry Company, later known as the New York and East River Ferry Company. The city took over the service in 1920. Bus service will be run by the Westchester Street Transportation Company as Route H. This is due to the fact that a new ventilation system has been installed in the seven mile long Cascade Tunnel which allows diesels to operate through the bore.
