Tuscarora Almanac – July 30, 2019 – The Book of Last Runs (in Memoriam)

It is with deep regret that I report the passing of Mr. Doug Diamond aka BMT Man.
He was one of the early members of our community back in the sub-talk days. He worked for the Transit Authority as a train operator and was active at the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven. Connecticut. He was a friendly and outgoing person and an avid railfan. I first made his acquaintance in 1999 when the re-building of the Franklin Avenue Shuttle was a major topic of conversation on the board. We would usually catch up with each other about twice a year either on a Nostalgia Trip or on Member’s Day at Branford. Doug was only sixty. He left us way too early.

No doubt when his train arrives at its final destination Dante, Selkirk and Karl B will be waiting for him at the station. Rest in Peace Good Friend.

Jim: I believe that it was in 2002 that a bunch of us chartered 1689 for the day. Selkirk was there.

No new structures had to be built, just re-configured. All the re-configuring work was done in the IND mezzanine. The long pedestrian passageway under 41 St had been within fare control for years, with the bank of turnstiles right across the IND entrance to the passageway, and much of the IND mezzanine was not within fare control, the opposite of how it is today, with most of the IND mezzanine within fare control and the bank of turnstiles at the passageway entrance removed.

What was lost was the fare control entrance in the middle of the passageway. You can still see were it was located inside the tunnel but there is no longer any evidence of it on the street.

I remember that as an exit only, with a high turnstile exit and no coin slot for entrance. That passageway had been within fare control and remained within fare control after the IND re-configuration, so any change to the mid-block exit was not caused by the new free transfer.

October 13, 2002, IINM. I was with Kev as he went through his mental checklist of what to check and what to turn on as he prepped 1689. He said he actually operated that car as a motorman, and from the look on his face, it was as if he'd been reunited with a long lost toy. I think that day meant a lot to him.

I recall that someone made a comment about the brake valve on one end of 1689 being a little “off” whatever that meant. In 1969 when I was a M/M on the KK I had a train that seemed to have no operable electric holding position. Whenever I made an application and returned to electric holding, the brakes would release instead or remaining applied so I had to operate slightly differently from normal. Now I don’t recall the car number but 1689 would have been in the BNT East at the time so It might have been that car I was operating. Another possibility is that 1689 might have an ME-30 brake valve instead of an ME-23. Both brake valves are functionally identical but when properly mounted in the cab, the positions on the ME-30 are off about a 1/4 inch from an ME-23. Most AMUE brake valves on the NYCTS were ME-23, but the SIRT cars and certain IRT Steinways and Lo-Vs that were equipped in the mid 1930s had ME-30s. Since the brake valves are interchangeable, it’s possible that during some sort of maintenance being done probably at 207 Yd, a spare ME-30 left over from one of the Lo-Vs found its way into 1689 causing it to have a slightly different feel.

Knowing Kev, he might have made that comment.
