All Eastern Division. I'm sure it was there for a reason, but what?

Those are probably GE R-16's in mothball storage.

Other GE R-16's were scattered to other yards like Concourse and Rockaway Park.

Aside from them being in storage as noted, why does this seem so unusual? It is all eastern division and cars get moved around a lot.

Motorman didn't change the head sign when the car was transfered.

Or they split the transfer consist at the shack and put the cars on different tracks.

Sometimes its railfan employees trolling.

One time in Canarsie Yard there was an R143 signed up as the A Express to Utica Ave.

One of those retired R42s in ENY yard is signed as the diamond Q.

But it wouldn't be too long after this that the cars we're pulled out of mothballs to compensate for the loss of the R-46's, no?

In the summer of 1978, months before I got hired as a c/r, many of them got pulled out of there and were lined up for scrap by Linden Shop. I spent a few hours there watching them moving cars around. Primarily 6400's. But a few 6300's ( basket cases I suppose.

The entire sash would drop after the glass was broken and the lever was pulled. It was a emergency escape feature that wasn't repeated when the R-21's were ordered.

Nah.
The M line had No part of the R16s back then.
Those cars practically stayed on the LL and J lines.
From THAT POINT, UNTIL THE MID EIGHTIES, THE 16 WERE THE STANDARD ROLLING STOCK FOR THE JAMAICA LINE.
I HATED THEM.

I rode on an R-16 Moe in October of 1986, from Chambers St or Canal St. to Essex. Somehow it didn't break down. It was only the second time I'd ever ridden on the R-16s. I remember looking at those slanted door pockets and thinking, those weren't always there. Well, they weren't there on my first R-16 ride on Sept. 23, 1967!:)

I welded steel plate over the missing rubber gaskets on tge 6398. The sashes are all interchangeable on all cars including redbirds without the fold in upper sashes. The box frame itself that holds the lower and upper sashes slides down its own track for emergencies

This rebuilding process was supposed to fix the original design issues affecting the cars.

Sad but true. So did almost every other subway car as the TA deferred maintenance on the entire fleet and the graffiti vandals had their way unimpeded by the police. Even the almost indestructible R32 cars looked like they had been in a war zone.

I’ve unfortunately missed out on riding the R16s as they weren’t a common sight on the Brighton line when I was a kid. M train was usually R27/30, R40m/42 and the occasional R32. Even when we traveled from Fulton-Nassau, anytime I saw a J train, was always an R27/30. Wasn’t until maybe 86 when the R40m and 42s were a common sight on the J and M but never saw an R16. Oldest car class I ever rode in service was the R10, that alone was a treat. The only way I knew the R16 existed was the 1977 King Kong movie, then seeing the actual car in the Transit Museum as well as CIY.

They should have kept them at Jamaica Yard.
At one point, before being at ENY enmass, they were playing around with them on the CC local.
Now,Since that was a rush Only route, the TA should have kept the fleet at Pitkin For that reason.

Guess they figured ENY could bring the 16s back from the dead.

Too bad the R16 GOH Program fell through.
Mock up car was sweet looking, but looked too much like the 44s interior.
The weight would have been way too much.

Not just the fleet, but the entire system!

It was Appalling to watch.
WHY did It take A MAJOR SLAP TO THE FACE ONE VERY COLD DECEMBER MORNING WITH ALMOST HALF THE FLEET DOWN, RED TAGS EVERYWHERE...

I Remember one winter storm, the Entire Brighton line was out from 7th Avenue, all the way to Coney Island for an extended period of time.
Why?
Snow!
SNOW!😑
