Pictures in twitter posts by Montgomery Country Fire Department and ABC7 show the lead car on the rails leading into pocket track B3. The first truck under the second car is derailed and the second truck on the second car is on the rails of outbound track B1. If you zoom in the second picture posted by the Montgomery Country Fire Department the points of the turnout are set for the through route on track B1.

I am am guessing the same.

Footage from a WUSA9 traffic helicopter shows a train parked in the pocket track. Dcmetrohero.com real time arrival showed that train was powered down in the pocket track before the derailment.

What did the reporter mean the passengers and the “conductor?” WMATA trains are all OPTO there are NO conductors only operators. When are the members of the news media going to attain and maintain the exhaustively encyclopedic knowledge of whatever they report on to have credibility?

The media through ignorance has adopted the practice of identifying the operator as conductor. You will never read in a press release by any transit agency the an operator identified as a conductor.

Seems the operator ran the red as the interlocking was in the process of unlocking and setting switch 5B from reverse to normal.

ATC is the cab signaling system with speed control. Not ATO. ATC is what prevents stop signal violations and overspeed.

There are several ways a T/O can override a zero speed command, as the safety commission reported in its findings of the October 2019 collision at Farragut West.

Makes no difference. ATC does not prevent an operator from proceeding in manual mode at a speed no greater then 15 MPH with no cab signals or past red signal.

One would think they might have instituted getting dispatcher permission first line on PATCO.

One would think they might have instituted getting dispatcher permission first line on PATCO.

They have, kind of, through a system called Mode Awareness Tool (MAT) (152.2 KB PDF file). MAT simple send an acknowledgment of permission granted back to ROCC and records that massage to the train Vehicle Monitoring System (VMS). No where in the description of MAT does it say a the train can not move with no permission granted.

I think WMSC required WMATA to implemented MAT to trace the source of any human error.
