R32 back in service Wednesday (7/1/20)

MTA taps world’s oldest subway cars after newest ones fail
By CLAYTON GUSE
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |
JUN 28, 2020 AT 7:24 PM

A set of 56-year-old subway cars will soar again along Brooklyn and Queens elevated tracks this summer, chugging to the rescue after the latest batch of trains the MTA purchased were pulled from service.

The vintage cars — called R32s and nicknamed “Brightliners” — first came to New York in 1964, when Lydon B. Johnson was president. They are the oldest train sets still running in any subway system on the planet.Transit officials had been running the old trains on the A and C lines before the coronavirus pandemic hit, but put them in storage in March after a shortage of healthy workers sparked major cuts in subway service.

The Brightliners were slated to be retired earlier this year — but a confounding screw-up by the manufacturer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s newest trains forced the agency’s oldest ones into service.MTA leaders pulled all 318 of the new cars — called R179s — on June 3 after two of them separated on an uptown A train near Chambers St.

The scary snafu was due to Bombardier — the Canada-based maker of the cars — failing to install a pin designed to hold the cars together, officials said. The cars were assembled in a plant in upstate Plattsburgh. The lack of R179s forced MTA officials to move train cars normally used on the L line to the J and Z lines, which in turn forced rush hour service on the L train to be slashed. But come Wednesday, the Brightliners will be running again on the J and Z lines, where they had served riders for decades. L service will return to its normal rush hour levels of up to 20 trains per hour, MTA officials said.

The old cars will have areas near the conductor cab blocked off to passengers so conductors can have space to social distance. Unlike the rest of the MTA’s subway fleet, train crews must pass through public areas when switching from one side of the car to the other while they open and close their doors.

Transit officials hope they’ll finally be able to retire the old cars this summer — though it’ll depend on whether the new R179s are in working order.

The train that separated earlier in June was the latest incident in a frustrating history with Bombardier, which has been building train cars for NYC Transit since the 1980s.

The MTA in 2012 purchased 300 of them for $600 million, but the company provided 18 extra for free because of a three-year delay in building them.

The last of the R179s were delivered to the MTA in December, and a month later transit officials also pulled all the R179s after some of the cars’ doors were not closing fully.

Along with Kawaskaki, Bombardier is just one of two companies that currently manufacture subway cars for New York City, leaving the MTA with little choice despite the company’s track record.

Transit officials in 2012 passed over a joint bid from the Kawasaki and Alstom, another train car builder, in favor of Bombardier’s proposal in order to save money and secure jobs at the company’s Plattsburgh plant. But for now, the Brightliners will get what may be their final run in a summer when subway ridership is down by more than 80% due to the pandemic.

Transit officials are not yet planning an official retirement ride for the historic trains, as those events tend to attract hundreds of railroad enthusiasts and currently do not jibe with the city’s social distancing efforts.

Alstom will have acquired Bombardier's rail division by mid 2021. In theory, Hitachi's former Breda rail division might be worth considering--if one trusts Hitachi to have cleaned up after Breda's less than stellar efforts. Sort of similar to many other industries where a wide spectrum of vendors has shrunk to many fewer world wide.
Compounding the problems of actual manufacturing skills is the huge menu of (IMHO mostlu unneeded)bells and whistles demanded. For example the new BART cars not only announce anupcoming station, verbally, there is a video display in each cay. Obviously, this is a convenience for deaf ort hearing impaired riders much asthe announcements are usefulto vision impaired riders (such as myself). However, having started riding transi over 65 years ago,Irarely have an issue figuring out when to get off despite the tinted glass which makes reading signage more difficult.

I think we are seeing a replay of Alco's problems with C-630s which had delicate printed circuit boards which were not robust enough for freight RR engines.

This means there will be no RFW available, correct? or will this only be the "conductor cab" mid train - point from which doors will be operated?
Thanks.

No RFW as the front of the car where the T/O is will be roped off.

As I mentioned on Facebook, there is no reason to completely rope off the front of the r-32s since the cab offers more protection than either the plastic shield installed on the buses or the cab doors on the R-62s and 68s which have vents in the doors that the R-32s do not!

C/R's have to switch cabs depending on which side the platform is, thus losing the "protection" of the cab.

I wouldn't run them outside of rush hours considering their age and their air conditioning.

I wonder if they will have road car inspectors riding along just in case, and if they ever did that in the past with certain equiptment?

I think Randy was talking about the operating cab. Generally, the T/O doesn't leave the cab until the EOL (although there could be reason to do so while en route).

Even if the T/O had to leave the cab enroute, it wouldn’t be any different from leaving the cab on an R-46, or later.

I hadn’t thought about that but even in that case, the wimpy, probably plastic, chain wouldn’t be any protection at all against the virus since its not 6 ft away. Since the trains are probably going to be kept in solid consists, a plastic shield similar to what is installed on the buses could be hung across the forward section of the cars at the C/R position and that would offer more protection.

Air conditioning works fine on the J/Z.

The first of 6 Z trains that heads outbound goes to all the way Jamaica, and stays in J train service all day. If it is a SMEE train, it runs around with Z route signs all day.

The fact that they sent 28 cars to ENY means they'll probably try to keep them in 4 car sets so they don't have to mess with the barriers to the cabs. They'll have 3 active trains and 4 spare cars.

They'll probably try to make the R32's be the 111th Street lay ups again.

But the T/O could descend to the roadbed from an R46 without entering the passenger compartment.

True but as was mentioned in the earlier post, that would only be necessary in a unique situation and the plastic chains blocking the forward area wouldn’t offer much if any protection in that case anyhow.
