Alstom will have acquired Bombardier's rail division by mid 2021. In theory, Hitachi's former Breda rail division might be worth considering--if one trusts Hitachi to have cleaned up after Breda's less than stellar efforts. Sort of similar to many other industries where a wide spectrum of vendors has shrunk to many fewer world wide.Compounding the problems of actual manufacturing skills is the huge menu of (IMHO mostlu unneeded)bells and whistles demanded. For example the new BART cars not only announce anupcoming station, verbally, there is a video display in each cay. Obviously, this is a convenience for deaf ort hearing impaired riders much asthe announcements are usefulto vision impaired riders (such as myself). However, having started riding transi over 65 years ago,Irarely have an issue figuring out when to get off despite the tinted glass which makes reading signage more difficult. I think we are seeing a replay of Alco's problems with C-630s which had delicate printed circuit boards which were not robust enough for freight RR engines. |
