[PHOTOS] Third Track Project At Mineola

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Jun 28 16:03:01 2020

Things are happening at Mineola station with the third track program in full swing. (All photos June 28, 2020)
From the garage overpass looking west. A NY Penn train waits for departure.

Looking east, the waiting room building that seemed to there forever was demolished.
At the Mineola Blvd overpass, you can see where the new third track will go.

image host

The classic old station building will remain. Both east ends of the platforms were closed. Temporary platforms were installed at the western end.

Another view of the platform.

Another parking garage rooftop view just east of the station. The Oyster Bay branch diverging off in the distance.
image host

The old substation will be demolished. Get your shots now.
image host

Nassau Tower is also to be history. It's sitting where the new third track will be.
image host

Because of the Glen Cove Rd bridge replacement, all service was terminating at Mineola.
After discharging passengers, the train then relays to East Williston on the Oyster Bay branch.

Let's zoom in.

Nice shots. 2 weeks ago I went by the New Hyde Park Station. They have a temporary station about 2 blocks west with pilings in for the 3rd track. Unless they use those ramps that they used at Woodside a few years ago, there will be no eastbound stops for quite a while.

I can't say for sure. Though more M-9's are on the property.

Thanks, yeah that should be interesting when sections of the third track are installed at the new platforms. Gonna be interesting.

This was supposed to be completed nearly 20 years ago -- but that was before the NIMBYS got involved. Good to see it limping toward reality in any event.

Like the R32's, in storage and not needed right now with 10% service reduction, and some M-9's running around.

It's a shame about the tower. I wonder if it structurally could have survived a move ?

Will the old substation remain ?

Unfortunately with design flaws. Oyster Bay trains in both directions must use normal westbound local track. It would be better if it were to be 2 island platforms.

Is there a track map or design schematic type track map of what these changes and improvements will look like?

The temporary platforms are movable. They will be relocated to the top of the Third Track as it is built.

Yep, lotsa parking garage upper decks to use in Mineola.

In fact, there's a new parking garage under construction. I don't know how close to the tracks it will be.

I think a trip to Mineola is in order.

Agreed 100% The design for Mineola is mind boggling-ly flawed! EB OBs will now have to foul the middle and then wb track (AND STOP ON THE WB TRACK) and they're going to have to build an entirely new eb platform, where as they could've just built the 3rd track on the south side of the EB platform. That would allow eb OBs to pull in and stop on the middle track, then proceed when wb track is clear (as currently done) while other main line eb trains could just bypass or pull in simultaneously on the southernmost track. More $$$ being spent for less operational flexibility. And then even if they go to fix the issue so eb OBs don't have to foul the wb track while making the stop, they'll still have to foul the ENTIRE main when departing Mineola.

I still can't get over the idiotic track layout they will be employing at Mineola. MAJOR BLUNDER!
