My *very* rough estimate is that afternoon traffic is half to two-thirds of normal. Each week it gets heavier. It is surprising that transit ridership is still so depressed.

Subway ridership using Stephen's stats has been rising at a little under 10% per week since the low point. This week's post shows a 10.1% increase over the prior week.

A few factors keeping subway ridership from increasing at a faster pace include:

1. Perception that the subway is unhealthy.
2. Public buses are free.
3. "Essential Schedule" makes subway travel slower and more unwieldy than usual
4. Traffic levels being below normal make using a car (if you have a car) both more convenient time/hassle-wise and healthier from a C-19 standpoint.

Perception that the subway is unhealthy.

That strikes me as a very sensible perception.

Many of the things that we are told not to do (cramming people together indoors) have to be done in order to ride the subway.
