Were you born on the train?

Wondering.

Big Baseball Events (Re: 52 Years Ago Today)

Happy Birthday!

On the day you were born, May 27, 1968, the Flushing IRT carried Mets fans to and from Shea Stadium to watch Gil's kids beat the Yankees 4-3 in the Mayor's Trophy Game. Mickey Mantle was in his last season and played first base all year.

Price of a Field level box seat at Shea: $3.50
Price of a Special Mayor's Trophy Game Program: 25 cents

Also, future MLB Hall of Famers Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas were born on this date.

Where did you find the information about the Mayor’s Trophy game?
Not only were they born on the same date but the same year of 1968.

Reserve seats were $2.50. I started to follow the Mets in '68. Little did anyone know that one year later they would shock the baseball world. I remember it well.

Fall 1969 - Mets made everyone smile....

I was at a Fillmore East late show in Oct. 1969 (Kinks & Spirit) - Randy California remarked on how well things were going for the Mets.

You're welcome!

Not transit related:
That night the Kinks were a bit ragged. Ray Davies was unfortunately a bit "tight", and at one point stumbled and fell over but got up. Either he or Dave forgot some of the lyrics to Death of a Clown. They premiered some, or most of their album "Arthur" that night.

Spirit encored with "Mechanical World" well past 2 am.

Transit related:
Ray and Dave Davies grew up at 6 Denmark Terrace, north London. Closest station to their home is East Finchley.
Dave Davies said growing up, he wanted to be a train driver on the Underground.

It was right during the weekend of Woodstock that the Mets caught fire and rode that momentum to a World Series championship. The entire city went bananas.

"Fall 1969 - Mets made everyone smile..."

Except the bookies. Every Joe six-pack out there who put a few bucks on the Mets cashed in big time. The neighborhood bookie took some beating.

You're right about that!

& in the unrecorded dubious landmarks dept. - various candy stores in towns and cities where one could place bets with bookies.

There was a certain candy store* somewhere in Middletown, NY that my cousin always used, and he pointed out to me once. Years ago now, I don't remember.

When I lived in Boston, a candy store that was known for decades as a bookies connection was pointed out to me "somewhere along the Beacon St. trolley line"

The Mets overcame 100:1 odds of winning it all. Nobody expected them to accomplish what they did. Unfortunately, Met fans expected them to repeat in 1970, but it didn't happen.
