That seems to cover all the bases.

The gates are down, the lights are flashing, and idiots will still go around the gates.

But it's a full-width gate. Not really possible to drive around. And nobody in North Dakota walks.

Full width there or not, 2 Midwest Charger engines are out of service indefinitely due to grade crossing wrecks, and Siemens says they won't have needed body parts available for 2 years.

Shitty maintenance contract Amtrak has with Siemens, completely different scene than with Brightline.

Actually a 3rd Midwest Charger got bashed up too. It was on the lead of California Zephyr and rammed a dump truck at a crossing in Nevada about a month ago. The 2 regular Gennies hauled it back to Chicago with train 6.

The photo was not in North Dakota, it was published in Progressive Railroading. What I found interesting was they Yellow sign warning that trains would pass at over 80 mph.

Closer to home, I was down by the tracks where a sign for a side track that made the crossing next to the maine lion informing the crew to wait 26 seconds before proceeding past the sign. Sure give time for the gates to go down. but 26 seconds. Why not 30 seconds?

79 mph... 26 seconds... Railroads like weird numbers.

The yellow sign is excellent. It's very easy to misjudge a train's speed, and especially to think that it couldn't possibly be going that fast.

79 mph makes sense. Someone wrote a rule saying "On all tracks where speeds of 80 mph or more are allowed, the following regulations shall apply."

79 came about due to a wreck in Illinois in the 1950's, and the rule was written to be "under 80".

It might not be the RR’s fault but it may me that’s how long it actually takes the gates to go down.
