42nd St Shuttle Project Announcement

Posted by andy on Fri Jan 17 16:14:45 2020

According to the MTA website, the current improvements to the 42nd St. Shuttle will include a free transfer to the 42nd St - Bryant Park Station (B D F M #7). Just think, a person will be able to walk underground from 5th Ave. to 8th Ave. and transfer between a dozen different subway routes.

Here is a link to the full MTA press release, which has additional good news: http://www.mta.info/press-release/mta-headquarters/mta-unveils-integrated-42-st-connection-project-along-42-st-corridor

Wow. When the Bank of America Building was being built, they touted a passageway from 6th Ave to 7th Ave which never came to pass, but they never said it would be within fare control.

I think they did say it at one point. But it certainly wasn't stressed, and I figured it had to be a mistake. This will be the only instance in the whole subway system where two consecutive stations on a line (Fifth Ave. and Times Square on the 7) are within a common fare control area.

If they had built the Dey St. passage with an inside-fare-control portion, and still built the connection between the E WTC terminal and the R Cortlandt St. station as they did, then the A/C would have had an inside-fare-control walking connection between the Fulton St. and Chambers St. stations, and by extension the 2/3 would also have had a connection between the Fulton St. and Park Place stations. But they didn't.

Bill: I rode the shuttle this pass Thursday (Jan 16). Track 3 and 4 are in use. Track 3 has a four car train but the easternmost car is closed. This is due to the short platform length at Times Square. Track 1 at Times Square is completely removed. It is intact east of the station and there was a work train using it.

I was there midday. There must be quite a scramble during the rush hours.

I'm just wondering where the passageway will be built. On top of the roof of the 7 tunnel? The shuttle tunnel is too close to street level to dig it out.

How about one of the abandoned shuttle trackways?

Sounds like a possibility. The shuttle trackway passes directly through the split mezzanine at the IND 42nd St. north end. Connection to the walkway could be near the new stairs at the NW corner of 42nd and 6th Ave., that allow access to the Bank of America building.

If they are going to keep tracks 3 and 4 then they could use the trackway of track 1 as least as far as 6th Avenue.

The Bank of America Building at the NW corner of 42 and 6 must have an unused passageway, because they first announced a connection in conjunction with its being built. It goes 2/3 of the way west to Broadway.

And the Shuttle platform is being extended eastward. I think that covers pretty much all the distance. If not, the NE corner of Bway and 42 is also a fairly new building that may have gotten an abatement in return for a passageway.

They could keep track 1 but shift the alignment a little north on track the former tk 2 to make room for a passageway.

This is all very nice but I mourn the loss of the remaining architectural touches from the 1904 Times Square station and the loss of the view from the west end of the shuttle platform to the 7th Avenue IRT showing the original track configuration. It’s living history and now it will be lost.

But they don't need to, as I posted in the very first response in this thread.

As part of the building's construction, a passageway was also built under the north side of 42nd Street connecting with the Times Square–42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal station. The passageway has never been used, but as part of the reconstruction of 42nd Street Shuttle from 2019 to 2022, the passageway would be opened and a new entrance would be built on the north side of 42nd Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue.
