AOC best not fuck with Cuomo. Wouldn't put it past him to put someone up to primary her later this year (not that that's necessarily a bad thing)

If the governor had any experience of the #7 train he would know that making it part of an LGA transportation link is ridiculous unless the MTA plans to double or triple the frequency of service, and even then, those small IRT subway trains will never be luggage friendly. To spend billions of dollars on an ill-conceived infrastructure project of this magnitude, all for the vanity of the governor and the glory of his public works record would be nothing short of criminal.

This has nothing to do with liking or not liking either of them. She is just right on this issue.

Cuomo should just take the 7 train to a Mets game or the US Open. Or have to ride the local in the non-peak direction.

If OTOH they had it go directly from LGA to Penn via the LIRR instead of a change it would make sense to go out of the way. I'd say to have it stop in Woodside so people can take the 7, but that's a schlepp up even with escalators.

Woodside also allows the bulk of the LIRR to connect from LI. Only picking up the PW Branch and forcing most of the Island to change trains and double back is pretty lame.

It probably would have made sense to run it to Jamaica, creating an airtrain hub at the LIRR hub. In essence connecting the two airports too.

The biggest physical problem with a JFK-style AirTrain from Jamaica to LGA would probably be getting past Roosevelt Ave. (with the 7-line el blocking the AirTrain from crossing above Roosevelt like the AirTrain crosses above other overpasses). And the problem with going from Astoria Blvd. on the N over the GCP is getting past the Amtrak viaduct. If they could branch a train off that, north of the GCP, that might be a way to bring rail from Penn Station to LGA.

Mr. Cuomo often says that La Guardia is the only major airport on the East Coast without a rail link.

Huh? Washington Dulles (for now) and Boston Logan don't have one either (putting a bus line on a subway map doesn't magically make it a rail line).

In any case AOC is late to the party. People have talked about extending the N for years, and every shitty two cent politician along the way grandstands and grinds the whole thing to a halt. It really is, this or nothing. For all his flaws Cuomo seems to have a knack for seeing a goal (LIRR main line 3rd track, finally opening NYP west end concourse, Replacing Tappan Zee, this Airtrain) and coming up with the imperfect solution that steamrolls the obstacles in order to get something built. Ideally the imperfections get ironed out later (hopefully fix bail reform, rail on the Tappan Zee, NYS tier 6, and Mineola station/interlocking).

They just need to extend the N 2 blocks into the industrial zone and then there are no barriers. But that would require either an el through a residential area.

That would be a very good idea actually on all fronts. You would I think need to install third rail on the NJT side to accommodate LIRR trains, however.

I would look into that anyway as part of a longer-term plan to extend the (N) into the Bronx via a new bridge following a new stop after Ditmars Boulevard, then stopping at Food Service Drive in The Bronx before going underground and running underground from that point up to Jacobi Medical Center.

The inability to carry an non airport related traffic because of passenger service charge financing severely limits longer airtrains. Extending the subway is probably the best option, especially thinking long term possibilities, but it would require a political will not likely present.

I will say that I'm no fan of AOC- leave it at that.

But in this case I think she's right. Having the line run northwest (i.e. backwards) from Willets Point makes no sense and will waste billions better spent. How about this:

Run a train M7/9 or M8, depending on which power system you prefer out of NYP and/or GCT, up the NY Connecting railroad, and branch off from there along the BQE, run over the GCP like the JKF Air Train does.

Advantages:

1) More logical direction
2) One-seat ride for many people, so they don't have to lug luggage through too many connections.
3) No tunneling
4) Little-to-no ROW acquisition
5) All technology currently exists
6) Does not foul the existing subway in any way.
7) Fully integrated with an existing railroad or two.

About the only additional costs I see are a catenary or 3rd rail, signals, and some railcars. Considering again, no tunneling or ROW acquisition, this should be doable. If some silly law says that an airport RR can't be part of mass transit, have our elected officials get that changed or waived.

He was handed growing economy and falling unemployment rate on a silver platter by Obama.

Trump has had to double the annual federal deficit to keep it from sliding back.

He stupidly de-stablized Iran like Bush-43 did to Iraq and lied himself into doing it like Bush.

He start a stupid trade war with China which put farmers in the midwest into recession, then has tried to bail them out with a $17 Billion welfare program.

Manufacturing sector employment has resumed it decline. Rail freight shipments are off 7%.

Trump is white supremist who has encouraged hate crimes against Jews and other ethnic and religious groups. Only he could say that Nazis are "good people" after Charlottesville. 70% of Jews are Democrats.
