R-179 car saga... The entire fleet is Out of Service! AM rush hour...haha

Posted by gold_12th on Wed Jan 8 00:31:10 2020

There some sort of safety issue that needs to be repair ASAP. Upper management made their decision to sideline the R-179 car fleet until they correct the problem.

On the B-division only, the schedule G/Os has been cancelled for the night.

Multiple car transfers between 207, Coney Island, Pitkin, East New York as they scramble their way make service in the AM rush.

The reserve fleet of R-32s and R-42 will be put back in service.

Unbelievable! Good luck for those you who have work in the morning.

One rider made a complaint to MTA on twitter...

@ginandtectonica

Th train was stopping and one half of the door opened a bit on its own before it got in the station, that’s new. Imagine leaning on that door 😭 @mta trying to kill us

Hello. That is so scary. Can you provide us with the train line, car number and time and location of this incident? We need to have that investigated ASAP! ^DJP

In my haste to get off the train I didn’t jot down this info. It was a C train heading uptown around 5:37. I suggest you check all C train doors just in case because raggedy

So MTA and Bombardier doing a real full blown entire car inspection on the R-179 car fleet as of right now.

This could get very interesting as the day progresses.

The problem with a “defect” like that is that car equipment dept will examine the entire fleet, not be able to find anything wrong and OK the fleet for service only to have the defect magically appear somewhere else. When I was in the command center I wrote up an A train (R-10s) that had 2 separate BIEs on the same trip. The car was shopped to 207 St barn and car equipment kept rying to duplicate the situation that caused the condition and was about to give up after the 99th try when on the 100th try the condition occurred and they were able to find the case and correct it.

Per a knowledgeable T/O friend, they even put 40 R-32s from dead storage back in service.

On balance, it's probably a good thing that this happened before they sent the remaining R-42s to scrap...

R-179 car saga...Multiple issues: doors, propulsions, air compressors & springs hang between cars

Posted by gOld_12th on Wed Jan 8 07:54:10 2020, in response to R-179 car saga... The entire fleet is Out of Service! AM rush hour...haha, posted by gold_12th on Wed Jan 8 00:31:10 2020.

The newest fleet of NYC Transit subway cars is having a tough time on the rails lately.

Dozens of cars built by Bombardier for the latest train model — known as the R179, which now run on the J/Z and C lines — were sidelined this week after suffering from different kinds of maladies, from door problems, propulsion issues and air compressors, sources told The News.

Even the springs that hang between train cars were bolted on too tight, ripping holes in the car body, sources and transit officials told The News.

Those springs are safety barriers to prevent people from stepping between cars from the platform.

“That could be why I haven’t seen them as often on the C train,” said Andrew Albert, the riders advocate on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board. “If they’re defective, Bombardier has to make good. Not only are they two years late, they have defects.”

There were 112 of these cars — costing roughly $2 million a piece — on the tracks as of December. The rest of the roughly 300-car order has yet to be filled, according to MTA public reports.

There were 16 defective new model cars out of the 96 cars at the East New York yard. There were another 32 new model cars in the transit system that had defects that forced them off the tracks.

“We have very high standards for the safety and performance of our subway cars, and if there’s an issue on a car we work to get it addressed right away,” said MTA spokesman Shams Tarek. “We continue to work through reliability issues with Bombardier; (NYC Transit) President (Andy) Byford is directly involved with bi-weekly meetings with Bombardier to force action on outstanding issues and deliver the remainder of the contract.”

Bombardier spokeswoman Maryanne Roberts said that the Montreal-based manufacturer has 50 full-time workers in New York working round the clock on the R179 cars.

“Introducing and integrating new cars with new technologies into existing transit systems is challenging and it’s not unusual to have some issues,” Roberts said. “Thus, we have over 50 full-time employees in New York City, working around the clock in support of the R179 fleet, as the in-service safety and performance of the new cars is paramount.”

NYC Transit, meanwhile, is desperate to get the cars running on the tracks so that it can retire the oldest of the 20th-century model cars still in operation, called R32.

Bombardier was already late to deliver the cars because of a cracking issue discovered during manufacturing. Even more problems cropped up once they started carrying riders in 2017, forcing the MTA to briefly suspend testing for nearly a week at the time.

“They’re in really rough shape. I see so many stuck door panels,” Albert said of the oldest models. “We’re putting good money after bad with those.”

There is reduced J train service during the morning rush while we evaluate a mechanical issue that may affect J and Z trains. J trains will make all local stops and run approximately every 7 minutes, compared to every 5 minutes in the standard schedule.

Z trains are not running.

Expect longer wait times and crowding.

I've (and I'm sure many others as well) have been though this with automobiles, home furnaces, computers, and smart phones.

Their subway car side certainly has had real problems, but I'm not sure the C series was not more financial than quality. They really didn't have the resources to bring it to market on a timely basis. They may have had better cash flow if there other projects delivered on time and without penalties. NJT seems to keep buying their commuter cars....

NBC-4: MTA Pulls Nearly 300 Brand New Subway Cars Over Door Problems

MTA Pulls Nearly 300 Brand New Subway Cars Over Door Problems
There were two recent incidents that prompted concerns about passenger safety, but no injuries were reported

The MTA said Wednesday it has pulled nearly 300 subway cars for safety reasons effective immediately, citing an analysis of "two recent incidents." No passengers were injured in either case.

The 298 affected cars were on the A, C, J and Z lines. The MTA said all lines were operating at normal service levels with the exception of the J/Z line, where "headways have been increased by two minutes in between trains for the AM peak period, and skip-stop service suspended."

In a statement, NYCT President Andy Byford said two recent incidents with the Bombardier R179 subway cars raised questions about "the reliable operation of a door mechanism" on the newly delivered cars.

"Out of an abundance of caution, NYCT removed all R179 train cars from service overnight for thorough inspection and re-deployed other spare cars to continue service for this morning’s rush and ensure minimal impacts to customers," Byford said Wednesday.

He added that updates would be provided "as they become available."

However the M-7 cars on the LIRR and MNRR have provided good service despite some initial issues and modifications. They are much more reliable than the M-1 cars they replaced especially in bad weather conditions.

This isn’t about “New Technology”, a train of R32/38s several years ago ran from Grant to Euclid with the doors open on at least one car.
