I guess no one in their office knows how to use photoshop. You could squeeze at tube stock car inside that space.

Apparently April 1 now falls in December on the British calendar. An unexpected consequence of Brexit, now doubt.

Oh good. We can get victimized by stabbings and hate crimes in class now.

There actually were first-class cars on the Underground at one time. Jubilee cars on the Metropolitan Line.

The Paris Metro had a two-class system until 1991. In the 1980's, I didn't see much difference in the physical equipment between first and second, though.

The Metropolitan Railway had 2 Pullman cars (Mayflower and Galatea) in service to 1941 , used on selected "business" and "theatre" trains from the far reaches of the line - Verney Junction / Aylesbury / Chesham - to Liverpool St The cars ran until WW2 gave the perfect opportunity to withdraw them. There was a supplement to use them and whilst they were a prestige symbol , usage was such that they supposedly never turned a profit. The idea of a cooked breakfast on the Circle line section appears like a mirage with today's loadings.

The District line built a fleet of electric trains - with first class sections from the turn of the 20thC - ideal for the affluent Western suburbs , less so for the Eastern section of places like East Ham and Barking. The interors were quite plus , and of course had smoking and non smoking sections.

Generally - all inner London suburban services lost 1st class travel opportunities in 1941 for obvious reasons.

I rode the Sprague cars during the summer of 1968. I only remember the 1st class cars on "my line" - line 12, since I always rode 2nd class on any of the others. These Sprague cars dated, I think, from 1912 when the line opened.

2nd class on line 12, had wooden (polished) seats. First class had deep cushioned seats. These were somewhat stiff when you sat down on them, probably from being so old.

I remember taking quick looks inside the 1st class cars on line 4 and line 13 - both had postwar rolling stock. Not much difference from 2nd class, except for the cushioned seats. IIRC, since this was 51 (?!!) years ago.

From Aylesbury to the city would have been over an hour - not much different today - (and they go no further than Marylebone today) - in the days of the Pullmans , you would have had a steam to electric loco change enroute ! (to be fair carried out in about 4 mins)

Thank you for this info.
I found the LURS booklet on abebooks.com about the routes beyond Aylesbury out to Verney Junction and Brill. Facinating history.

The ultimate book on the Pullmans is by Alan A Jackson - "London's Metropolitan Railway" - a work of very great research but superbly readable. Highly commended as a business and social history. Look it up. The Met line has a very special place in London's railway history.

Thank you. I think I actually have that; found it at a bookseller on eastern L.I. called "Wooden Soldier Books." I put it on my "to read" pile, and then it got packed away with other books into my storage unit when I needed to move.
