I read the FNY article, and the 1901 Scientific American article that FNY provides. VERY interesting. In this day and age, we think we know everything. Yet nearly 120 years ago, there were ways of getting the job done...

Thanks for sharing.

I love the old drawings, I'm a retired mechanical design/draftsman, I started off making pencil drawings on paper.Finished my career in 3-D modeling. Things sure have changed!

It's surprising that there are no known photos of the Jerome Park branch line when it was in passenger operation.
Then again, maybe not. Not long ago I was looking for a photo of the Upside-Down House on the Queensboro Bridge, basically an ambulance elevator to the then Welfare Island hospitals. It was around until at least the 1960's, yet there are very, very few photos online.

If memory serves me, that building was also for staff and for deliveries to Welfare Island as it was known. The name was given to it because when you drove onto it from the Queensboro Bridge you were on floor #1. When you got off at ground level you were on Floor 8 or whatever the case was.

Thanks for posting this!

This was a great catch by Kevin Walsh. Looking at Google maps, you can still see faint traces in the property lines east of the Mosholu Parkway, south of Bainbridge Ave. It even looks like there's a trace where the branch would have diverged from the Harlem line, though it's probably a rail or tie.

There are many other locations like that all around the city. Traces of abandoned rail lines are usually indicted by odd lot configurations which still may be visible.

This was an interesting article. I live about two blocks from the old site, now virtually obliterated. When I moved here 32 years ago, my neighbor friend, also a railfan, informed me of the old r.o.w. Very evident in the odd way the buildings were situated. At a time in the early 1990s there was a Korean grocery store on the r.o.w The interior had very little flooring, mostly fresh dirt. It had the feel of an old car barn, which I dismissed, but who knows.
