I have archived the 1988 articles in which the MTA readily admitted the Archer stations were overbuilt, and that if they had it to do over again, the work would have been simpler.

28 years later, we got the SAS. All 3 of its stations are overdone, but especially 86th Street. I cannot for the life of me understand why it's so deep. I don't consider Lex/63 to be an SAS station. Although SAS trains use it, it was built at the same time as Archer.

86th St is at the crest of a hill. They may have not wanted the subway grades approaching the station to be that steep.

So the tunnel was kept level, and the station was deeper than the others because of the slope of the street level?

Lexington Ave was The Queens Bypass Mainline station, and prime interchange/transfer for the new subway routes to the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and lower Manhattan.
It's deep because of the Lexington Ave Express tunnels, and Metro North under Park Ave.

It is there essentially due to the fact that a station could not be built at Second Ave, And facilitate a connection with the new subway running under that street.
So Third Ave given an entry to bring riders as close as possible.
It Is therefore a Semi SAS station, but not directly Under Second Ave.
