[PHOTOS] R-38's (Pre-General Overhaul)

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Wed Dec 4 08:05:42 2019

A sampling of the R-38's before general overhaul. Not showing other lines the R-38's have traversed.
Four car test train at Kings Highway on the Brighton Line.

Assigned to the (A) line at 207th St. with original rollsigns.

A mainstay on the (B) line entering Bay Parkway station with blue storm door. (September 1978)
image host

Serving as south motors on a mix of R-40A's and R-32's at West 8th St station.
This shot was always a favorite of mine. But why the backup to West 8th St, was this in the days of the (NX) ?

image host

(F) switching to middle track at Ditmas Ave. Not sure if this is an (F) Express or reroute.
image host

R-38's made it to the Eastern Division on the (M) line.(August 1979)
image host

Had to do some Photoshop work on this underexposed image.
On the Willamsburg Bridge in the old configuration. Twin Towers are Honorable mention. (March 1979)

(N) layup on the (B) Line at Bay 50th St. station. (July 1979)
image host

Original route and destination roll signs ! (July 1979)
image host

I heard at the NY Div. ERA that R-38's were running on the (RR).
I don't how long I was waiting for this R-38 (RR) train at Queensboro Plaza station.
It was bitter cold and when I stepped aboard to ride, it was even colder inside ! (Janaury 1979)

image host

Photographed at the Astoria Line's station at 39th-Beebe Ave station, this tower was removed years ago.
It looks like someone is manning the tower. (January 1979)

At the Sea Beach line, waiting to enter Coney Island yard for layup after the AM rush hour. (October 1979)

We're ending this post at Dean St on the Franklin Ave shuttle with an R-38 and R-11 unusual lashup. (March 24, 1973)

I'd say that . . .

. . . would have been around 1969 when they were starting out with the "borgaschmord" combos of trains that would be most prevalent on the IRT "A" Division through the mid-1980's when the cars from R-12 to R-22 were being retired left, right, sideways and diagonally.

You have to remember that back then, there was still a whole fleet of older R units still around.
While the newer cars were busy tossing them out the door, Coney Island still had to use whatever works to meet service requirements.

Great pics!

Too bad there was no video, would love to hear those Darth Vader brakes . :)

Re: the 4th pic, looking at the track map, I would say that was a scheduled F express. It is transitioning from the southbound express track (IND) to the single middle track (BMT). In order to do this, it would have had to been on the express track south of Jay Street, as there is no interaction between the express and local tracks after that point. And the destination is Coney Island which is where all the express Fs terminated (locals terminated at Kings Highway).

Just one note, in the years before GOH, the R-38's were hot as hell in the summer. I believe the R27/30's and R-32's were a bit cooler inside.

Yes it may have felt that way but the R27/30s had the drop down window sashes which allowed more air inside the car and both R32s/27s/30s had the older style fan grills which blew the air downward. Some R32s also had the newer style fan grills (3800-3949).

Strictly as a passenger, with no professional experience, I thought they were the best looking cars that have ever run on the system. None before or since were as attractive. With the fluting only going up half the car side, they looked like bigger (I know they weren't), classier R32s. The fact that there were relatively few of them added to thy mystique for me.

I know that folks with operating experience have posted on here they didn't like them; I respect that. I'm speaking purely as a passenger, who loved 'em.

In the mid 1960s there were 4 R32s that were parked at 35 the St/6 Av. Each car had a different fan grill. The public was asked to walk through the 4 cars and then cast a paper ballot for the fan grill they felt did you he best job.

FYI, I have seen somewhere an artist’s rendering of a LAHT R-38 with a similar rounded end since apparently, the TA was considering departing from stainless steel and returning to LAHT which fortunately didn’t happen. The paint scheme was almost identical to that of the R-36 W/Fs but the blue would have been more aqua and less turquoise.
