LA: A (Blue) Line Gets an "F" Grade From Riders

Posted by George Foelschow on Fri Nov 29 13:52:23 2019

Los Angeles Times

I can attest to this story in today's Los Angeles Times as I rode the Blue (rechristened "A") Line from Rosa Parks Willowbrook station to downtown 7th Street one morning last week. It was a slow trip as ongoing construction was evident on the route.

Hopefully these are growing pains that can resolve themselves...

If anything, this fiasco demonstrates the sheer incompetence of Metro management which considered meeting an arbitrary deadline was more important than testing the new construction. How could catenary be installed too low in five locations causing damage to half the fleet? Aren't there standards to be followed in installing wires? At the transfer point between Green and Blue Lines, used by hundreds of people daily, both the escalator and elevator were blocked off. Isn't that an ADA violation? I call it criminal negligence.

That transfer has two escalators now and only one is blocked off. Actually it has three escalators. The third is in the bus bay area next to the second elevator which is also in service. You have to leave the station and walk about 100 yards. I'm guessing that's how people were still getting to the green line when the blue line was shut down.

I don't think that the "new blue" new A gets an F, but it's not a good situation. It seems an awful lot like the old blue line with lots of delays.

It is NOT criminal negligence... There is nothing criminal about it.
It would be criminal negligence if the left the escalator running and then someone got hurt on it.

Shut it down, that is save.

If you cannot get to where you want to go, well tough darts... That happens to everyone once in a while.

I ride the green line (soon to be the C line) as well as the Silver line bus (soon to be the G Line, don't ask me why buses get letters) on my daily commute. The Silver line runs in the middle of the 110 fwy and if you're in a wheelchair you need to take an elevator up two levels to get from the Silver line to the green line.

Once I got on the bus and a guy in a wheelchair got off to make this transfer, but found out just in time that the elevator was out. The only way to make the transfer would be to get off at the next station, transfer to the 81 which parallels the freeway, go back to the green line and then take another elevator up one level.

This poor guy gets to the next station at Manchester and that elevator is out as well. We get to the next station at Slauson and that elevator is also out. We have to go all the way to USC where he has to take the elevator down, wheel two blocks to the 81, and then travel back for maybe 30 minutes (10 min on the fwy).

That was just terrible! Not sure if it violated ADA, but he didn't appear to be the type to sue. I guess when you're challenged you just get used to the frustration.

Talk about walking in another man's shoes, metaphorically, of course. Travel on public transportation in Los Angeles can be frustrating at best and maddening at worst. But I wouldn't trade this city for North Dakota, to cite one example.

And I, being a wizard of unlimited magic, would rather be in North Dakota than in Lost Angles.
