R33/36WF Equiptment Question

Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Thu Nov 14 12:44:35 2019

Shown here in 1978 is R33/36WF equiptment heading north on the #4 Woodlawn Jerome line. My question is why were these cars sent to the mainline & not kept on the Flushing line when the #7 needed all the rolling stock available? Wasn't ridership numbers on the #7 on the upswing at that time?
Just wondering.

Not commonly done but it was not unheard of when car shortages at one shop happen due to program mtce. other shops had their spare factors reduced. It's possible that these 4 cars were loaners from Corona. It's also possible that this was not a road train, but a shop drag sending cars for heavy mtce. or wheel truing.

Let me clarify the 2nd point. If these cars were being sent to Coney Island or over any B Division tracks, they'd likely have to have Corona cars at the operating ends because B divion stop arms are on the opposite side of the track from A division track. Most Corona cars had B Division trip cocks while some had trip cocks on both sides of the car.

"If these cars were being sent to Coney Island or over any B Division tracks..."
Any Flushing Line car after 1942 had to be delivered(or removed) via B division tracks at Queensboro Plaza. IIRC only certain "pilot" first cars had tripcocks on both sides for B division operation.
That said, could those R33/36WF's been operating on the main line awaiting A/C installation at 207?

I don't know, but I remember riding one in a mixed consist on a #2 or #3 train during summer 1977. I am sure #7 service had been cut from the 1960's by then, and the Main Line IRT was falling apart.

I recall seeing WF Cars on Main Line routes starting c.1970. I first saw them on the #1 and the #6.

Did they ever not operate on the mainline routes after the fair? 1/4 before GOH and the 6 after was the assignment I was under the impression they had.

The first time I saw them them on the main line was on the #1 train on or about 1970. My first reaction was WTF are they doing here?
I don't know if they worked Mainline routes prior to 1970.

Actually, most Corona had A Div tripcocks. There was as mall fleet of R-33 singles with 4 tripcocks that were set aside each night as head end horses to be used on the Coney Island Transfers (CITs) which were the shop drags that had to go the CIYd for heavier maintenance than Corona barn could provide.

At the time they were used on the mainline, #1 and #3 cars were inspected at 240 barn so they could show up on either Bway or Lenox.

I know that in the 1990s, some WF cars were on the 4 and 6, usually mixed in with mainline cars. They seemed to have been moved there permanently.
