Retaking walls along the Q,B and N lines

Posted by Zac on Sat Nov 9 20:46:26 2019

An earlier post here told the story of the homeowners along the lines getting violation letters about maintaining the retaining walls. Well, the MTA addressed a letter to the buildings dept, specifically the person that issued the violation, and took responsibility. It was professional in tone but you could just feel the person saying " what kind of idiot are you?" The actual letter is linked in the article below.

It is a sort of "retaking" inasmuch as the Buildings Department essentially was ceding ownership of the walls to the homeowners and the MTA reclaimed them. It certainly would be awkward for numerous independent contractors to be working along an active rail line.

That letter was about the best thing I've ever read on this website. I love it.

Beyond awkward, more like dangerous.

I just can’t believe that the buildings dept didn’t realize how crazy that sounded to expect 300+ individuals t keep the subway running.one 50’ lot at a time.

Not surprised. A DOB commissioner with hands on experience and proper oversight would have stopped this before it happened.

Why would the Commissioner get involved into a citation issued by an individual inspector to an individual homeowner?

The block-and-lot numbers for the retaining wall are the same as the homeowner's block-and-lot number with one minor difference that the NYCDOB apparently missed. The MTA easement lot numbers have an 'E' at the end of them. Why am I not surprised.

Because it's not the same inspector for one and secondly, since it is a violation erroneously issued times 300 (+/-) for the same issue that isn't an obligation of the homeowner.

THe deputy and/or Borough commissioner has an obligation and responsibility to ensure that the facade unit or retaining wall unit issues violations correctly.

My Dad would read articles in the paper about government (state & fed. and various agencies) decisions that were "pennywise pound foolish" among other things; just shake his head and say "the bureaucratic mind..." without finishing the sentence.
