Andy's Almanac - November 9

Posted by andy on Sun Nov 10 00:21:56 2019

1965: At about 5:20 PM on a moonlit, clear evening, electric power failed all over the Northeastern United States, including NYC and its surrounding suburbs. The entire NYC subway system, the Long Island RR, and the NY Central and New Haven RRs (today;s Metro-North) grind to a half. Thousands of subway and rail passengers were stranded in dark trains and tunnels, and all must be walked to emergency exits in order to safely reach the street level. Amazingly, there are no injuries as the NYCTA and railroad personnel, plus thousands of police and fire personnel, work to rescue the stranded riders.

A friend was on a stuck Brighton Line train on Brooklyn. The train ahead of him kept going as normal. Evidently, they were on a different power grid.

Freeport saw the problem coming and did not go onto the grid like they would normally have done.

I think that Freeport no longer generates its own power.

Hear at the abbey, we have a 100 KW generator.

Statin Island stayed lit up, plus a small area of Brooklyn that was fed from Staten Island.

Coming home from school on the "late bus"* in Northport, L.I. we noticed all of a sudden that the street lights had gone out, and the houses were dark along Bread & Cheese Hollow Road (the couple making out in the back seat didn't notice and apparently didn't care)

When I got home, my parents were cooking on the propane camp stove (bought for outages during the hurricane and/or blizzard seasons) and had the radio on. We started hearing annoucements about power loss out beyond Smithtown, then the rest of Suffolk, then Nassau, and then the entire region.... uh-oh.....

*I was in 10th grade. HS went till 5:15 pm - new HS hadn't opened yet so we were on double session - freshman were 12 noon - 5:15pm)
