Freeport saw the problem coming and did not go onto the grid like they would normally have done.I think that Freeport no longer generates its own power. Hear at the abbey, we have a 100 KW generator. Coming home from school on the "late bus"* in Northport, L.I. we noticed all of a sudden that the street lights had gone out, and the houses were dark along Bread & Cheese Hollow Road (the couple making out in the back seat didn't notice and apparently didn't care)When I got home, my parents were cooking on the propane camp stove (bought for outages during the hurricane and/or blizzard seasons) and had the radio on. We started hearing annoucements about power loss out beyond Smithtown, then the rest of Suffolk, then Nassau, and then the entire region.... uh-oh..... *I was in 10th grade. HS went till 5:15 pm - new HS hadn't opened yet so we were on double session - freshman were 12 noon - 5:15pm) |
