Coming home from school on the "late bus"* in Northport, L.I. we noticed all of a sudden that the street lights had gone out, and the houses were dark along Bread & Cheese Hollow Road (the couple making out in the back seat didn't notice and apparently didn't care)When I got home, my parents were cooking on the propane camp stove (bought for outages during the hurricane and/or blizzard seasons) and had the radio on. We started hearing annoucements about power loss out beyond Smithtown, then the rest of Suffolk, then Nassau, and then the entire region.... uh-oh..... *I was in 10th grade. HS went till 5:15 pm - new HS hadn't opened yet so we were on double session - freshman were 12 noon - 5:15pm) |
