Glasgow Underground Last Days, 1977

Posted by Dupont Circle Station on Tue Oct 15 11:23:59 2019

Was going through my pile of "Watch this sometime" YouTubes.

I rode the Glasgow Underground in 1971. At the time it was the 4th city's rails I had ridden. The odor they refer to smelled to me like PATH's mixed with peat, diesel, and burned coffee. Any other oldtimers remember the old system?

Enjoy!

I watched the video right through- my 96-year old Dad was born in Glasgow, and lived there until 1956. I've been there 3 times 1983, 2010, and 2014. Obviously, I've only seen the "new" version of the subway. My impression was that it's small and cute, but it does the job for that city. On my 2010 trip, I remember a very helpful station agent at Shields Road - he gave us lots suggestions for thins to see in the city.

In the video, I really liked the guy we first saw at 3:58- he did a great job conveying Glasgow humor, that "Glaswegians like Dirty, smelly places". His subsequent commentary was good as well. As for the football (soccer) fans caught underground on a broken down train, I would not want to be there for that!

I've seen that video. The old Glasgow subway looks dingy but I would have loved to have taken a ride on it.

Especially if they were coming from a Celtics Vs Rangers game.

I rode the Glasgow Underground in 2017, and the Edinburgh Tram in 2017. I also rode the other Glasgow underground railway, the low level suburban railway.

Yeah...

I find it absolutely amazing that so many Americans think that soccer is some sort of civilized, non-violent game. I like Scotland very much, and it even turned out that I have a previously unknown half-sister over there. But the Celtics-Rangers thing does not reflect well on the place.

Yeah, but now it's kinda pseudo-modern. The cars are mini- R46s and the stations mini Jamaica Centers.

I bought the book below from Transport Diversions (no longer in business). Looks like it can still be found if you go on line.
It's approx. 9 X 11 and features excellent full color pictures of the Glasgow subway before modernization throughout. A couple of pages at the end has pictures of the subway after modernization, with a picture or two of preserved cars in a museum setting (Glasgow museum of Transport possibly?)

Speaking of PATH's musty-like odor, what IS that from anyway??!

I have memories of that smell now, even though I haven't ridden PATH in about 5 or 6 years.
