The RS-3 consist could be the first seasonal run of a Shelter Island Express around Memorial day. Just 2 coaches, and rather than 2 or 3 parlor cars up front, they went in back, and used one of the 2 open end observation cars. The middle car is an ex Bangor & Aroostook (not B&M) coach- grill car. Notice the boxy bulge in the roof line. Likely one of cars 8551- 8553.

That photo was from December 1967. Note the steam in the photo since these were steam heated coaches. Also not foliage on the trees.

They owned two, Bill: 1519 and 1520. Both were ex-D&H.

They had 1519 and 1520. The acted up when MU'd with other engines. They got them 2nd hand from D&H. They almost has 1536, but sent it back with mechanical problems. They originally painted a blue stripe around the middle to be the Cannonball locos, but that did not work.

Now that I think of it, my mother took me on a fan trip with that consist. Pretty sure it was the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend of 1967. It ran down the Hempstead Branch to Garden City or Country Life press, ran straight north to Mineola, then up the Northport Branch and back, and out to Port Jeff.

That evening in Port Jeff, there was a huge fire in a building just east of the station, and they were moving stored trains in the yard around to get them out of harm's way. One of the P72's had very wrinkly skin until it was retired in 1999. Perhaps it got too close to that fire.

I didn't know the connection just west of Mineola heading to the Hempstead branch still existed in 1967. When was it severed along with the link to the West Hempstead Branch?

The West Hempstead branch extension to Country Life Press was abandoned in the 1940's or 1950's. I vaguely remember seeing some double track from Country Life Press though around 1961.

From The Mitchell Field spur to Mineola was intact until the late 1960's.

You may be correct. the date on the slide was December 1967, perhaps when it was processed. Probably photographed in November.

Thanks. A few years back I was around the Garden City/Hempstead area somewhere south of where you can see the remnants of the line branching off towards West Hempstead, and I recall seeing a fenced in area along a property line that must have been part of that branch.

They ran a very nice looping system on the West Hempstead branch to Mineola once they electrified in 1930. Then the PSC demanded LIRR eliminate all grade crossings north of West Hempstead, which was ridiculous. No money and that line shouldn't have been a priority. So they petitioned to shut down passenger service, which they did.

Damn shame. As NYU-Winthrop's(or whatever they are calling it today) footprint is expanding and that would have been a nice way to use cross-county public transit, not to mention as an emergency reroute.

Thanks Joe V. for the info and commentary.

You should buy the Arcadia Publishing book on the LIRR Oyster Bay Branch. There are a lot of photos showing the West Hempstead Branch in Mineola, and what it looks like after abandonement.

I also saw a picture of a long MP54 consist making a hard left turn into Mineola station, but forgot where I saw it.
