LA Expo trains now more crowded than NY

Posted by Easy on Sun Sep 22 12:10:29 2019

Service cuts to the expo line from 10 tph to 7.5 tph have made them more crowded than NY according to at least one rider. I don’t know about that but it’s just another example of how the people in charge don’t have a clue as to how to run a good service. Their current long term target is to run a free service and I have no doubt that it will be a poor one.

The entire Metro budget has been cut. What possible excuse is there to justify that? The funding sources, to the best of my knowledge, are intact. Climate change is the defining issue of our time. Service on the Expo and Gold lines (and Blue, when complete) should be maximized to the physical limits possible. The entire Metro board and top executives should be forced to ride the Expo line during rush hour and wear prominent tags identifying themselves by name and rank and experience riders' feedback to this outrage up close.

What a display of total incompetence by the Metro Board. They should all resign in shame.

dumb desk jockeys. schedule the trains at 5 min, push the city department to re time the signals. full trains should have preference over single occupant autos.
"lightrail" was supposed to be the affordable choice instead of fully private ROW w/o traffic sabotage.
Unfortunately, the kleptocrats figured out how to gold plate light raiol just as they had subways and elevateds so we can't affordfull length platforms, sufficiently robust catenary, and the traffic signals are set to obstruct transit.

I agree with both of you. I am very disappointed with both Metro leadership and the various committee boards. The leadership vision of what good service looks like is very different than mine and any “choice” rider. And the committee boards are beyond useless. I think many of them are politicians and political appointees that have no clue about transit.

The entire Metro budget has been cut.

They must be pissing away much of what is left as WMATA's combined capital and operating budget is less then half of the figure quoted in the article.

In WMATA land routine maintenance fall into the operating budget. Procurement of new equipment and or replacement, new construction and major infrastructure rehabilitation is in the capital budget.

WMATA's combined budget is still less then half of the figure quoted in the article.

Side note: The capital costs for the construction of the Silver line branch is not in WMATA's capital budget, as that construction project is under the management of the MWAA.

Metro is experiencing decreases in ridership on its heavy rail lines, Red and Purple. At a fundraiser for Jackie Goldberg, running for a reprise term on the Los Angeles school board, I cornered Supervisor Hilda Solis, a Metro board member, to address Red and Purple issues. I brought up the problem of derelicts sleeping on the trains, especially acute after dark, and others with severe personal hygiene problems. She was attentive and sympathetic, and promised to "look into it", a typical non-answer for a politician.
I should stress that Metro is a transportation agency, not a social welfare agency. Expensive infrastructure is wasted if it isn't used to its full potential.

Agreed. Not to offend, but if you listen to metro officials they see transporting passengers without any other means as their primary mission. And that whatever service they provide is better than nothing. I really do think that’s how they envision transit. Service so cheap that the poor can afford and so bad that only the poor would choose it is where we are headed.

"Climate change is the defining issue of our time."

Yes, it's nothing more than an issue. If they can tax airlines, maybe they can vote themselves a raise.
