Government programs gave us RRs

False. Government getting out of the way gave us those. The B&O couldn't expand without that.

And how many rebuilds have they gone through? Only by dint of the nature of railcar building are such rebuilds a step above Chevy Bel-Airs in Cuba rebuilds.

Never mind the Canadian not running over its original route via Calgary, but via the Super Continental's route via Edmonton and such places (never mind not stopping in Edmonton's downtown).

Oh, they like building those, especially for the MLVs. (Right?)

VIA's Budd cars have gone through one major rebuild. Several of their "Prestige" cars on the Canadian just went through their second. Both HEP I and HEP II coaches are also funded to get a second rebuild soon.

Greenhouses would be hot even with dry air. Just like a car in a parking lot with it's windows rolled up. Your off base on your basic science.

In fairness though, it isn't hard to say that, since water vapor is the most abundant GHG....

Yes, and via rail would have replaced them all 30 years ago if they had any reasonable sort of funding at all.

LOL, "reasonable funding". How about deregulating passenger rail so that CN and CP could have kept running it and invest in speeding up their services, instead?

No, I don’t support the wholesale discontinuation of passenger rail in Canada.

CN and CP are not over regulated, do as they please, and have slowed down their entire systems with Hunter Harrison inspired Precion Schedule Railroading. Capitalist abuses at work, with under investment, massive track abandonments and short term share price focus is all that matters.

I remember R38/40,42,44 as well as the already retired R32's from day 1 to the end.

Add in there the 7 line WF cars too.

And the M1's from start to finish.

I'm ancient.

The SDP40F's had a habit of derailing so they didn't have much of a choice.

The P30's were poor performers. They were leased to SP for SF based commuter service.

Many F40's (the engines that saved Amtrak IMO) lasted more than 25 years. But 25 years is a good run for a diesel.

Not sure about the couplers, but if they aren't going at high speed (> 80 MPH), wouldn't the tilt system be unnecessary?

If the coupler problem can be solved, the passenger cars could be good as lounge cars, leased to other railroads, maybe. If refurbished with a more compact seating arrangement, then maybe they be used as regular commuting equipment.

The R-44s were the first cars that disappeared in my lifetime (that I was aware of). Quite a bit of Amtrak motive power fits that description as well, but I wasn't that familiar with the E60's and Turboliners at first.

What route are you thinking that would take? Reverse move on the main line within Harold interlocking? Or install a new flying junction Wye where the Bay ridge freight line crosses the LIRR main at ~51st ave? (+electrify the BR up to that point as well)

Yup.
except the newest car I rode at the time was a 42...
First saw a 32 in Jamaica, and mostly all the rest at Coney island... basically on the F at on time or another.
My pops had a run in with a R44 ,that put him in the hospital, ending his transit career.

Don't know that trackage area well enough to reply. Even if a flyover were necessary, I do believe that service making JFK more accessible from the Bronx and nearby Conn, is a worthwhile goal.
