CTA Heritage Fund Charter 09/14

Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Tue Sep 10 09:56:19 2019

A train of CTA Heritage Cars, Boeing 2400 series will be used Saturday, Sept. 14 as a fund raising charter. Funds will be used to rehab the four PCC 6000 series cars, #6101/02 and #6711/12. The charter will duplicate the CTA West-South route in 1978, Dan Ryan/Lake Street. Members of the FACEBOOK Chicago-L group are given free passage.

I presume those were the first and last 6000-series pairs. Or did they start from 6001-02?

I must be hopelessly old, if CTA's Boeing 2400 series cars qualify as "heritage" cars. In my view, the 4000 series cars are the newest heritage cars.
More importantly, who is sponsoring this fund-raising charter? Can anyone attend who is not a Facebook group member? Where and when does it start? What is the cost? Details, please.

Yes, 6101-6102 came from Fox River Trolley Museum and 6711-6712 came from the Museum of Transportation about two years ago.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, there will be a charter reenactment for the 1978 WEST-SOUTH DAN RYAN/LAKE STREET ‘L’ route using cars from the CTA Heritage Fleet. Participants will board the charter at WASHINGTON/WABASH station at 10:00am. The charter will run to 95th St terminal. 30 minutes allocated to explore this NEW facility. The charter will then run to northbound terminal, Harlem as a 1978 ‘L’ train using Heritage Fleet 2400 series cars. The charter will then go back to the Loop. A photo stop will be held at Laramie station. Tickets are FREE. A donation to the Heritage Fund is asked, only $10.00 and a PAYPAL account has been set up. …..https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr…

This all seems very odd. Usually, charters are sponsored by a recognized organization, such as CERA or Illinois Railway Museum. In the absence of a sponsor, is this a CTA event? At only $10.00 a pop, it's hard to see how a profit after expenses for a Heritage Fund is realized.

I assume the original poster of this thread chartered the train. That's how he's giving out free rides. I could be wrong though.

$10.00 is very inexpensive. That should bring lot of people out.

Thanks for all the reports, questions, etc. Yes, I sponsored the trip. The donations raised $550 plus and still counting. CTA supplied six cars which was more than needed. The cars need to get out more. One car was a little "hot" and no matter what the RTO did, reset "P switches", nothing helped. The only mishap occurred....what happened when two trains entered an automatic junction at the same time. Well, the Orange line train was ushered through. Our supervisor had to go into the tower to get our charter the lineup. He had to stay behind to insure that the junction was behaving correctly. Our charter "reLooped" the Loop allowing him to board at Adams/Wabash. If the next charter uses two 6000s, it won't be free!
