The first eight cars are entering service tomorrow as the 6:50 a.m. train from Huntington, due into Hunterspoint Avenue at 7:49 a.m. The trainset’s later runs for tomorrow are anticipated to be as the 5:06 p.m. train from Penn Station due into Hempstead at 5:57 p.m., and the 10:37 p.m. train from Penn Station, due into Babylon at 11:32 p.m.

The M9 trainset is expected to operate on these same runs on Thursday. On Friday, the LIRR expects to lengthen the trainset to 10 cars and operate it on a different set of trains. The trainset will be lengthened again by two more cars, on Sept. 20, with the resulting 12-car trainset serving yet a different collection of trains throughout the days that follow.

The M-3 fleet staying until 2024 is a result of delays in M-9A procurement, separate from the M-9. The latest plan has been to keep those regardless of any progress made on M-9 deliveries.

The article mentioned that the M3s are being fitted for PTC in anticipation of their being kept around a while. If that is the case then I see no reason good, bad, or otherwise why non NTTs can’t be equipped to work with CBTC as well!!!

PTC isn’t CBTC with ATO. :-)

NYCTA isn’t going to make the investment in CBTC without ATO, and ATO is general is unlikely to manifest itself on SMEE stock. I mean, car equipment could rig up something to enforce the cab signals and moving block aspect, and some have argued for that for the work train fleet, but it’s not something that’s going to be plug and play like a USB key for the SMEEs or museum fleet.

It's not for comfort. It is to conserve electricity or not working the propulsion systems harder. MTA MU's are the slowest accelerating non rapid transit MU's around, compared to Arrows and Silverliners.

The acceleration rates seem to be the same as the M7s. They don't feel as fast as say an Arrow 3, the arrows still feel like fastest accelerating MUs in the area. Then again it's 3rd rail vs overhead wire IDK if that makes an difference.

It takes the same amount of energy to reach xx mph whether you take forever to get there or 15 seconds. Obv, if better accel means reaching higher speeds between stops, that results in more energy used, especially if braking energy is wasted rather than sent back into the supply with regen.

I see the part about the right color tones of blue and yellow/gold, and the fonts, but not whether such color combos must be diagonal vs. horizontal. It also allows MTA to retain its logo.

LIRR has never done a mid-life overhaul to an MU, hence M-1's and M-3's go to scrapper before 35 years of age. They don't even change out the foggy south side glazing on the M-7.

Did you take a look at the aftermath of several of those crossing accidents and the condition of some of those MUs ? Front ends of two of engulfed in flames, another above the floor gashed with concrete penetrations. All cars totalled. Engineers had to open the door and get out fast.
