Thank you. I often rode 80 on North Capitol Street about 1957-1959, during which period the pole retrievers were given electric motors. Your description means that the underground worker did not have 600 volts in his pit. What a job that must have been in raw weather!

The plough pit was a literal pit? I thought it was analogous to a "pit stop" and that no one stood beneath the ground. Wikipedia so states.

The plough pits in DC were definitely underground and I assume the ones in Manhattan had to be also, otherwise how could the plough be installed under the car?

Am I correct that TARS had only two locations with a plow pit: 1) for Willis Avenue cars on 125th Street west of First Avenue; 2) on West 145th Street west of Eighth Avenue? The odd thing was that the carline bearing the route sign "Broadway-145th Street" had to swap plough & pole just to cross Eighth Avenue and reach its turnback. Charles L. Ballard's book has photos of convertibles 991, 77, 86, and 979 on this route. The cars on the X-149th Street crosstown were also convertibles that could take a plough.
---
The 125th Street pit was in use until 1941, the 145th St. pit until 1947. I vaguely recall a wooden shanty on the south side of 145th Street near the plough pit.

Here's a link to both changes from London. It's only 20 seconds long.

Many thanks, Stephan Baumann, for your link to an excellent video. It would appear that in London, the plough could be attached quite simply because a head or a connecting knob ran above the slot and could be fitted under the tram. Smart design.

Here's a link to a more technical description of London's conduit system. There is also mention of differences with DC's system.

I was only 3 years old when the last of the Bx trolleys went, but I recall the 138 St Xtown ran all the way across 135 St to 8 Ave in Manhattan under wire and AFAIK, the trolleys coming across 181 St and 207 Sts in uptown Manhattan were under wire so why did 125 and 145 Sts need conduit?

Sounds a bit less labor intensive and more efficient than either TARS or DC Transit.

Thank you for the link.

I noticed the URL for dewi.ca

His site includes a couple (maybe several) pages of photos of the Liverpool Overhead Railway in the early 1950s.

That's a seriously fascinating webpage!! I'm glad it's still around. I see tha it hasn't been updated in a long time, and has that "1998" feel about it.

Judging that Dewi took so many of the photos himself in the late 1940s-ear;y 1950s, he must be about my Glasgow-born Dad's age (96). I wonder if he's still with us.. does anyone on here know? Considering that the page isn't getting updated, I suspect not..

Thanks for sharing...

@randyo
You asked why 125 and 145 needed conduit.
In the case of 125th Street, from Third Avenue to Amsterdam Avenue, 125th Street was part of Manhattan-only conduit routes, T and K. From Amsterdam Avenue to Broadway, it was part of Manhattan-only conduit route B-Broadway.
---
I don't know the year in which overhead trolley wires were forbidden. I suspect it was early, about the time electric traction replaced grabbing a moving cable.
---
At any rate, beginning at the north, there was overhead wire to allow non-revenue Bronx cars to reach the Kingsbridge barn at 218th Street, Manhattan.
West 207th had maybe a mile of overhead wire from the Harlem River to Broadway, but notice there was no connection to the conduit K-Kingsbridge at Broadway.
West 181st Street had a busy half-mile of overhead wire from the Harlem River to the double crossover before Broadway. Again, there was no connection to the conduit K-Kingsbridge on Broadway.
West 155th Street had overhead wire from the Harlem River to whatever was the western terminal, also lacking connection to Manhattan conduit routes.
---
Likewise at West 135th Street.
---
The case of West 145th Street is special, as apparently the TARS was able to operate cars there because it held the franchise for the odd route from Eighth and 145th to Broadway and 181st Street. That question belongs to the tangle of corporate history.
---
I have no idea whether any of the Bronx routes with western tags had their wires strung in Manhattan before or after anti-wire legislation.

You're welcome. I found Dewi's website when searching for more info. on the Liverpool Overhead. And yes, I'm glad it's still up as well.
If someone is no longer active on-line, or has passed, does his/her website just stay on-line automatically?
I thought if you had "space" of this kind on-line, an extensive website with many pages, you had to pay some kind of upkeep fee to keep it on-line and accessible.
Hope arrangements have been made to keep his site up and running into the future.

Websites stay up until the web host and domain registrar stop getting paid (approximately speaking). The whois information shows that the domain was first registered in 2001, last renewed in 2018, and will expire if unpaid in 2021, so clearly someone is keeping an eye on it.

I did some searching, and unfortunately, it looks like he passed away in 2013, so someone in his family, or a railfan colleague is maintaining it.
