Am I correct that TARS had only two locations with a plow pit: 1) for Willis Avenue cars on 125th Street west of First Avenue; 2) on West 145th Street west of Eighth Avenue? The odd thing was that the carline bearing the route sign "Broadway-145th Street" had to swap plough & pole just to cross Eighth Avenue and reach its turnback. Charles L. Ballard's book has photos of convertibles 991, 77, 86, and 979 on this route. The cars on the X-149th Street crosstown were also convertibles that could take a plough.--- The 125th Street pit was in use until 1941, the 145th St. pit until 1947. I vaguely recall a wooden shanty on the south side of 145th Street near the plough pit. |
