Posted by Q23 on Sun Aug 25 14:14:46 2019

Here's footage of (M) trains running to/from 145 Street in Harlem. For the section between 34th Street and 145th Street, skip to 34:30 in the first video.

I rode one today (R160 8416 as the south motor) from 145 to 59-CC.

Interesting looks from some of the people who just got on the train, probably thinking it was a C and realizing it was the M.

As I said to one guy who was trying to compare the subway map on his cell phone to the FIND in the car: "Don't try to make sense of it. This is a special service reroute because the 1,2,and 3 trains are not running". His reply: "That's a good idea".

Meanwhile, "M" trains would not have had access going to/from 96th Street-2nd Avenue, because of affected southbound track work between 36th Street [Queens] and 47th-50th Streets [Manhattan] via 63rd Street and 6th Avenue. That is also why the Coney Island-bound "F" trains are operating via 53rd Street for these past two weekends.

They usually bundle those things together, so it could have been that the M reroute was decided first, then later the 63rd St trackwork was scheduled since it would be only the F affected.

I rode on one of those M's. Sometimes I actually - and actively - seek out such "borgaschmord" routes. A few years ago on a Saturday, I rode an R train that ran via the 6th Avenue line between 95th Street-4th Avenue and Continental Avenue. Interesting to travel from the Fourth Avenue line, then over the 'Manny B' onto Sixth. Other times, when Sixth Avenue lines run 'via the C line' between West 4th Street and Jay Street-Metrotech. But then, I'm not your average straphanger . . .

If you look closely on the BMT tracks, such as Myrtle Avenue - or Fourth Avenue, or the Broadway line (especially at City Hall), you can still see the original iron cap and porcelain insulation for the third rail that was installed in the 1910's. Their shape differed considerably from those that were installed on the IND starting in the late 1920's / early '30's.

Heh.
I guess the MTA finally operated the service it planned to do so many years ago with a variation.

Looks like it was well received, too.
This version of the M is sure making it's rounds through the system.

Yeah, some of those planned reroute are very interesting. My personal favorite was the F via West End, 4th Avenue, and Broadway. On weekend, there was a signal problem somewhere which had F trains running on 60th Street instead of 63rd Street. Some of the unplanned ones are a real gem, if you're in the right place at the right time.

As opposed to when it was light blue (which I am increasingly convinced, should have been PMS 306).

'67 colors, my friend. '67 colors. No way would M have been PMS 312 pre-'79, despite what the MTA's 1970 Graphics Standards Manual would have claimed. Especially since the 1967 map at the Transit Museum in Brooklyn, in the reaction of the light with that route, had more in common with PMS 306 than PMS 312. (Plus PMS 312 being the color of the later JFK Express.)
