Sometimes I actually - and actively - seek out such "borgaschmord" routes. A few years ago on a Saturday, I rode an R train that ran via the 6th Avenue line between 95th Street-4th Avenue and Continental Avenue. Interesting to travel from the Fourth Avenue line, then over the 'Manny B' onto Sixth. Other times, when Sixth Avenue lines run 'via the C line' between West 4th Street and Jay Street-Metrotech. But then, I'm not your average straphanger . . .If you look closely on the BMT tracks, such as Myrtle Avenue - or Fourth Avenue, or the Broadway line (especially at City Hall), you can still see the original iron cap and porcelain insulation for the third rail that was installed in the 1910's. Their shape differed considerably from those that were installed on the IND starting in the late 1920's / early '30's. |
