Robert Ray 4 train

Posted by LuchAAA on Wed Aug 21 12:02:01 2019

Next week will be 28 years since the crash.

I wonder if he would been able to tolerate alcohol better if he was irishcatholic like many IRT Bronx motorman were?

I'm serious.

Some ethnicities tolerate alcohol better than others.

Old timers went down the road with that little metal thing filled with alcohol.

They actually needed it for performance.

It is true.

IRT was very Irish and stories about guys with those little metal things to carry alcohol.

I find it interesting that alcohol is a sports drink for some and disaster for others.

Whatever, there's no excuses in the what's right vs wrong. There's tons of them in government.

The conductor knew, whoever he walked past to check in and get his train in the morning knew, co-workers knew, supervisor must have known, that wasn't his first day working drunk. No consequences for anyone.

Except the passengers.

My Italian and Jewish friends like to meet for Dunkin or pizza.

My Irish Catholic and German friends prefer alcohol. They find it hard to socialize or bond without it.

Whatever Robert Ray drank before crashing his 4 train would be buzz zone levels of booze for Irish Catholics, Germans or Swedes.

Most serious alcoholics don't live long enough to lose much hair. Two notable exceptions would be Bogart & Sinatra. Both were world class drinkers & both wore toupees. BTW both not Irish.

Irish dominate bar scene. They are overrepresented.

My Irish Catholic and German friends also love cruises and cheap Mexico getaways.

Cruises are great for alcohol lovers. Warm weather enhances alcohol experience. They seek warm weather to enjoy alcohol better.

These men could not consume a fraction of what Judge Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey can.

If Bogart and Sinatra were Irish alcohol would be good for them. That's my point. Anyone can booze up. Not everyone should. Ethnicity plays a role in how it affects a person.

Larry; absoultely!! But many of them got on the train half in the bag to begin with. Then drove several miles home when they got off the train. After a few accidents & DUIs, RR liability issues crept in which led to #6152 "Poughkeepsie" being converted back to standard coach from a bar car, thus ending an era. Many of the bar car clientele are now off riding that big bar car in the sky!

Nope, he was late for work, signed on and ran out to his train which left Woodlawn late. Dispatcher never checked him for "fitness". Put cars out of the first few stations. Conductor never saw him.

tx for the details. Still it leaves me feeling like that didn't have to happen.

"Put cars out of the first few stations. Conductor never saw him. "

1. MM can just run onto a train without any coordinating with the conductor? Don't they work as a team??
2. Didn't he stop well past the platform several times? That would be enough for the conductor to be primed to halt the train, +/or go have an in-person talk, you'd think.

Dunno, whole thing does not seem like an unavoidable fluke like someone in good health having a stroke, it's more like taking 'small' gambles until hitting the jackpot.

It was a new conductor, he knew what he needed to do but was afraid to do it, what with the T/O being a senior operator.

Me, I'd a pulled the hand brake and call it in as bad brakes. Let TSS find him drunk as a skunk or whatever.

Crews are supposed to check in before their first run and the dispatcher is supposed to look them over to see if they are fit to operate.

Oh Well

"That would be enough for the conductor to be primed to halt the train, +/or go have an in-person talk, you'd think."

I agree 100%. However, pure speculation here; the conductor might have had the idea that if he did that, he'd be labeled as a rat, "company man", or "watch your back around him", not a team player etc. resulting in him being shunned or otherwise alienated from fellow union men. Also possibly having a brake shoe tossed thru your parked car's windshield. Theres' a lot of that mentality out there. JUst do your job & worry about yourself & mind your business. Conductor was probably hoping that he'd be lucky & just get thru this run w/o any serious problems. Didn't quite work out that way.

When the train gets back to the yard, couldn't car inspectors tell if a cord is pulled? If the train goes BIE & the cause is because the conductor pulled the cord when no emergency existed at the time of the pull, wouldn't that conductor be in deep manure?

The train had made over-runs, and missed a station entirely, He could report defective brakes.

The Onion and the T/O never need know further than that. The TSS would take care of it and keep the C/R out of it.

Of course it was because the T/O was bombed, but the conductor could not know that, all he knew was about the over-runs, and that by itself would be enough to take the train OOS. And that does fall within his area of responsibility.
