Video of Elevator Bank at 72 St & 2 Ave

Posted by heypaul on Thu Aug 22 05:21:27 2019

Here's some elevator action at 72 St on 2 Ave.

I really like the open shaft way where you can see the movements of the other elevators. Reminds me of the old cage elevators in old buildings, where everything was exposed. It used to scare me.

Does anyone remember office buildings with human elevator operators that had a giant display board in the lobby showing the location of all elevators and the floors that had calls for the elevator to stop? And there was an elevator starter who would signal the operators when to go.

I remember the old cage elevators in Manhattan department stores - Gertz or Macy's maybe?

Also, remember the wooden esclators, with their chug-a-lug, clunk-ty-clunk-ty-clunk-ty sounds.

The wooden tread escalators were preserved at Macy's Herald Square.

There was a full bank of manually operated cage elevators in the oldest A&S store. They were really antique and rather gothic.

By the oldest A&S store, you're eluding to the downtown Brooklyn store, write? I remember the operators were mostly African American men, but I don't recall the cars being open bird cage elevators that you could see the other cars in their shaft ways.

Yes, downtown Brooklyn. But like other older department stores (like S. Klein on the Square, and even Macy's, A&S was cobbled together from a number of buildings. The oldest unit was east of the newer main store, which had the big banks of modern (for then) elevators.

The smaller "original" store was the one with the cage elevators.

I didn't know that. I found a webpage with info on the store and a picture of the 5 story rotunda. A&S You remember that?

The article is an excerpt from Michael Lisicky's book Abraham and Strauss. I hope to stop by the main library and pick up a copy. I also didn't know that Abraham Abraham helped design the Hoyt street subway station.

I don't specifically remember the rotunda st all.

In that graphic, assuming it is looking at the Fulton Street side, the 1898 building a the eastern end, contained the marvelous cage elevators.

Old department stores often contained marvels, sometimes down a corridor or behind false work.
