15th Anniversary of Subchat Today

Posted by mcorivervsaf on Sun Aug 18 00:03:41 2019

A decade and a half ago today, transit buff Larry Fendrick launched Subchat, which replaced a similar site that was shut down by nycsubway.org creator Dave Pirmann, just 11 days prior.

Here’s where it all started.

Many thanks to Larry for allowing everyone on here to use this platform to discuss anything, and everything transit related, as well as off-topic discussions.

Thank you, Unca Larry!

Lots of handles that have since disappeared from the scene as well as handles that are here today.

Sub-Talk had developed a large and dedicated following prior to its being taken down. Many of us were in contact with other people and somehow we heard about Sub-Chat. Also Dave posted a message about it as well on NYC.ORG.

So sub-chat started fifteen years ago. How time flies. Many of us started with sub-talk and remain in contact to this day. Sub-chat remains viable to this day despite determined efforts by some to tear it down. It remains a vital source of news and a place to exchange ideas.

Thank you Larry for keeping it going and for allowing me to post the Almanac.

R7 Torresdale Express

Several others that posted less frequently. Lots that have disappeared but we don't know what happened and may have also passed.

Of my favorite 50 or so posters from 10 years ago, only a handful still post regularly. No offense to the ones still holding it down, but we've lost a lot.

Seems it has lasted longer than the original SubTalk. I know nycsubway.org was up and running when I got Internet access in the summer of 1995, but I don't know if SubTalk was around at that time.

Makes me wonder if some other board will replace this one when the time comes for it to end.

Tuscarora Almanac – December 13, 2016 – The Book of Last Runs (In Memoriam)

It is with deep regret that we record the passing of (Selkirk) Mr. Kevin McAleavey (1951-2016).

He was a fine gentleman and a rail scholar and we miss his wit and wisdom. The coming winter will be made a little colder by his passing.

Farewell good friend and may a train of Arnines take you to your destination.

“And somewhere men are laughing and somewhere children shout, but there is no joy on sub-chat tonight, mighty Selkirk has bowed out”.

I think of Kevin every time I drive up the thruway and pass exit 22 for "Selkirk". How on earth he got the thruway authority to name an exit after him I will never know. But Selkirk was a true Renaissance man.

I would agree. I like the format of this board, more open and spontaneous for everyone to respond; in a way, like an ongoing conversation, rather than those websites with separate subject webpages.
One example - though I don't know much or follow heavy rail, there'll be a transit thread, where a similarity of connection to heavy rail is mentioned, and the people will expand upon it. My reaction - gee, I didn't know that!

Yes, I think for awhile the #8 was the third ave. el. #8 was also the route number IIRC given to the Astoria Line, when it was still jointly operated with the IRT.

Being from Philadelphia, do you remember riding the original Market-Frankford cars - the earliest part of the fleet that had clerestory roofs and looked very similar to the pre-war IRT cars?

I read somewhere on-line, that the later pre-war Market Frankfort cars could not operate with the earliest - the way the difference was described, seemed as though the earlier cars were also high voltage.
Thanks!

I'm here since day-1. IIRC the old Sub-Talk started around 1995/96 because I remember accessing it at work before I even owned a PC. For a while the original SubTalk didn't require an ID/Password which allowed for 'fake' postings. Weird but many have been posting here since before some of the newer posters were even born.

Express Rider, a friend sent me this information, it's interesting.
Yes, the Market Street, and Frankford cars were electrically incompatible. So they could not be operated normally within a single train. There was also the issue of their being of two different lengths, as the Market Street cars were just over 49 feet long, and the Frankford cars were 55 feet long, which is the standard that was established for the Budd cars, and the current M4 cars. The Market Street cars and Frankford cars did however, share a common coupler. This was for the purpose of shop moves, and in the event of a disabled train out on the line, another train of either type could pull it to the yard. This practice was once again carried over at least temporarily, with the delivery of the M4 cars. As they were first delivered and there were so few of them, they were fitted with a temporary coupler compatible with the coupler on the Budd cars, for the same purpose of moving a disabled train on the line. As the M4s began outnumbering the Budds as more and more Budds were retired, you could see more M4s with their current permanent couplers in place.

As you should know by now, I failed to achieve any of the career paths goals objectives call it what you will that I set for myself while growing up in New Jersey. This was due to an almost incomprehensible paucity which means lack of knowledge, determination, and commitment of time and effort.

1. Garbagemanperson, north Jersey - I even picked out my company name and address: DiCapasso Carting and Sanitation, 101 Industry Drive, South Carteret, New Jersey

2. NHL hockey player

3. Motormanperson, The City of New York

I tell people I am a motormanperson because it impresses the people I am trying to impress. I have no problem lying in order to garner respect and be showered with accolades. Am I proud of it? No. Can I live with it? Yes. Would I do it again? Absolutely.
