Old Chicago L cars at the Illinois Railway Museum

Posted by Dave on Fri Aug 9 12:21:58 2019

CRT #1024 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1898 and ran in passenger service until 1954. It was originally Northwestern Elevated Railroad 24; renumbered 1024 in 1913; and became CRT 1024 in 1923. Converted to a work car in 1954, 1024 made its last revenue trip in 1958.

CRT #1797 was built by ACF in 1907. It was originally built as a trailer for Northwestern Elevated Railroad #288, and rebuilt to a motor and renumbered 1797 in 1913. It became CRT 1797 in 1923.

Thanks! It's a great museum and we were fortunate in that it was more or less empty the day we visited.

We did ride the main line in the North Shore interurban. I posted some pictures of it a few days ago.

Nice photos! I really like them! Beautiful restorations. Thank you for sharing.

Interesting that there was no anti-climber ever installed on the gate car.
Also noticed the narrow rectangular window to eliminate a blind spot in visibility on the front left side of the motorman's cab. The deck roof Hi-V at Branford has a window like that as well.

Kudos to the craftspersons among the IRM volunteers for the restoration work. I wonder how the paint scheme of Northwestern car 24 (CRT 1024) was derived, since it predates the era of color photography. Was original paint buried under layers of CRT and CTA paint?

Probably the original paint color records are available to the restorers.

Nice catch. The color scheme 1024 is beautiful as is the "wainscoting". Are those eyebrow windows up top?

The car has a clerestory roof with windows that opened and allowed air to escape.
