The first R-14, 5803 is delivered to the subway system. The R-14 order was for 150 cars, 5803-5952, built by the American Car & Foundry Company.

Tuscarora Almanac - August 11, 1958 - The Book of Wrecks

Sloatsburg, New York
Erie Railroad

There was a head on collision between two passenger trains on the Mainline of the Erie Railroad near Sloatsburg, New York. Westbound train No.53 (Hoboken to Port Jervis) headed up by EMD GP-7 1402 collided with eastbound No. 50 (Monroe to Hoboken) under the control of Alco PA-1 859. The accident resulted in five fatalities and permanent retirement of the GP-7.

The R-14 turns 70 today. Wow they're one of my favorite cars. RD340 is the only one left in work service as a snow fighter.

There was a minor difference between the R-12s and the R-14s. The R-12s had the blue floor with the orange diamonds by the stanchions and the orange stripes from the seat areas to the doors like the R-10s. The R-14s had a plain dark red floor.

Other than this they were mechanically identical?
propulsion, braking systems etc.?

Yes. technically all SMEEs from the R-10s through the R-32s are mechanically identical except for the door controls which are caps & triggers on the 10s through 14s and inside the cab on everything else. Even on cars with in cab door controls, a change was made from faucet handles on 15s through 22s to buttons on everything since.
