Back when the R-27/30s were properly mated. I wonder if they coupled 8513 to 8236 and that kicked off the whole mismatch thing (probably not).

If they were, it would've been possible - R-26/28 (IRT) and R-27/30/30A (BMT/IND)'s "married pair" was structured "Protestant" like as opposed to the "Catholic" style introduced in the IRT's R-29's.

Yes they were mated together.

The R-26s and R-28s converted to Catholicism during GOH.:)

Well with the drawbars (R-29, R-33, R-36 etc), a bit more problematic to mismatch, but not impossible ( see all the mismatched R-32s, possibly a few R-40 Slants, and the famous R-40M/R-42 "mixed marriage" as a result of the Williamsburg Bridge crash.

The R32's weren't mismatched before GOH, but many did come back mismatched because some cars needed more work than others so they were matched up as they were completed so they could be quickly put back into service.

I wonder why they did not think ahead when rebuilding Metropolitan Avenue and make it where it could handle 10-car trains?

It wouldn't make sense to do it unless there were definite plans to upgrade the rest of the stations on the line as well. I don't think this will happen any time soon with all of the MTA's funding issues. If you had longer platforms how would you get longer trains to utilize them?

At the time of the fire, the original signaling was still in place, and extending the platform would have required not only relocating the switches but realigning the tracks as well, which was not of immediate importance at the time.

The idea would have been over time (not all at once) lengthen ALL of the platforms in the eastern division.

I agree, but at the time Southern Div platforms were being lengthened, the demographics in the neighborhoods served by the Eastern didn’t call for longer trains and a few years lated the city’s financial crisis precluded any non super essential spending on such projects.

Considering the times, it was lucky they rebuilt it at all. This could have served as an excuse to abandon the line.

At the time the M still served a purpose by going into the Southern division.

There were also serious structural problems to lengthen stations to 10 cars on the Nassau/Centre St line stations. Chambers St would have been the most challenging.

I’m not sure that Fulton St wouldn't have even been more difficult.
