When BN built their new HQ in Ft. Worth a couple decades ago, they arranged electric utility feed from two different parts of "the grid" and bought a diesel genset with enough fuel tanks on site for 7 days.

MTA SHOULD have set up segments of the IRT to be autonomous in just this sort of situation. Allowing one entire division to go down on a day of extreme temps is bad.

This also happened on a Saturday earlier this month.

I've never seen so many strong signs of incompetence from MTA NYCT than I have over the past 3 years or so. There were multiple derailments in 2017 caused by human error. This year there were several incidents of debris falling from the #7 tracks. I was a passenger for three platform overshoots on the Brighton Line over the course of about 18 months. At the beginning of this month, my trips on the southbound N were screwed up for two evenings in a row (almost exactly 24 hours apart) for the same reason. What gives?

Oh yeah. Front line employees always take shit, sometimes literally.
I've known toll takers( when they had them) get bills with feces on them whenever there was a toll increase.
Happened also every now & then to MN ticket sellers after a fare increase.

Byford was asked that during tonight's presser.

He said the cause was under investigation.

He was also asked if both incidents were related. He also answered that's under investigation too.

So with this network issue did the signals stop functioning? Why couldn't they even operate the Shuttle? (each train is on it's own track)

IIRC July 6 was a ConEd power issue affecting a large chunk of the west side, trains and surface.

This appears to be a computer glitch. That they do not have an entire backup computer on line and waiting to take over is a mystery.

Live by the computer die by the computer.

Watt LION understands NOT is why the signal system from the 1800s is not working. Signals and Trippers have nothing to do with computers. Just because some high mucky-muck cannot see what is happening doesn't cut it.

Oh, yeah, they took away the local towers. Aren't they physically still there for situations just like this? Heck, even I could run those old GRS boards.

In simple English "network issue" or "network communications issue" means total signal failure.

The shuttle wasn't operated because it still has grade time signals which, like on the main lines, by rule the t/o needs permission to key by.

So that assumes a different set of computers controls the CBTC #7 line signals, therefore, not affected.

Since train T/O's and conductors have two-way radios (although the older radios with the docking station (R1/9 times) and the external outside antenna probably worked better), why couldn't each train announce their location and given permission to enter the next station.(Pelham 123 approaching 23rd St. with a green light). The radios were probably used to tell the T/O's to stop and remain awaiting further instructions.
Secondly, if the trains were going to remain in the stations, why discharge the passengers? Let them either leave or wait it out in the A/C cars.
