The arena developer has said previously that they would likely run shuttles from the development on the south side of the track to a Main Line station. If they're going to do that, they might as well just continue another few thousand feet to Bellerose station... Four stations in 1.65 miles is nearly subway stop spacing!

Interesting read. Probably the best bet is to rebuild the rest of the Belmont Park station since it will be closest to the new arena.

A new station with a shuttle bus connection is totally useless according to this article. And I agree. When Nassau Coliseum was closed for renovation, they should have razed it and built first class arena like the one proposed.

I'm not quite seeing as how the proposed development will create enough rail demand to justify a new station. It's really just the Islanders arena that counts, for 41 games a year. The shopping mall (people still go to them?) and hotel aren't likely to create much demand.

And Nassau Coliseum should have a rail link too via the remains of the LIRR Central Branch. Not ideal as it neglects those coming from the east, but it would be a start.

The whole Belmont Park thing is ridiculous. If they're going to use a shuttle bus, Bellerose is fine with some added switches to its east. And rest assured the $100 million will balloon to $1 billion by the time the whole thing is said and done.

Posted by italianstallion on Mon Jul 8 13:07:37 2019, in response to [ARTICLE] New LIRR train station planned for Belmont Park, posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Jul 4 03:18:42 2019.

From MTA.info:

New LIRR Station

The new train station will be located between the Queens Village and Bellerose stations on the LIRR's Main Line, just east of the Cross Island Parkway. Electric shuttle buses - which are already planned to run from parking lots within Belmont Park to the arena site - will also serve LIRR riders traveling to the grandstand and planned arena, hotel and retail village. In addition, the new full-time station will relieve pressure on the existing Belmont spur station during major events like the Belmont Stakes and provide critically-needed redundancy if there is a service disruption to the spur, as occurred in 2018.

Importantly, the new station will provide direct service to Belmont Park from both the east and west, as opposed to the LIRR spur, which can only provide westbound service. Now, instead of forcing Long Islanders coming from the east of Belmont to ride past Belmont Park to Jamaica Station and then transfer to a train that backtracks to the spur, travelers who live east of Belmont on the Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches will have a one-seat public transit ride straight to Belmont Park. This will reduce travel times and is expected to increase the number of event attendees who use public transportation rather than driving, reducing congestion.

In addition to providing a regular, full-time public transit option to and from Belmont Park and the new arena, hotel and retail village, the new train station will also serve as an additional commuting option for area residents - something the community has needed for years. The station is expected to receive service approximately every half hour during peak times and hourly during off-peak periods. The parking lot north of the Belmont race track, which has 2,860 spaces, will be shared by commuters and arena patrons.

Previously-agreed-to upgrades to the existing LIRR Belmont spur, including the installation of automated track switches, are still included in the project. These upgrades will allow trains leaving the spur after an event to serve stations both east and west of Belmont - providing another post-event public transit option for attendees.

Constructing the new full-time station on the LIRR's Main Line and upgrading the existing spur is estimated to cost $105 million. The arena developers will cover $97 million - 92 percent of the total cost - and the State will invest $8 million.

Trains from the east carrying arena goers would have to cross over four tracks to access the Belmont Park spur. Big no-no especially with the rush hour.

Because the current station is off the mainline, and harder to run trains to. This will work out better, as any train could now stop there that passes.

Race special trains are run at off peak hours where they can be timed to minimize impact on regularly scheduled services and changing at Jamaica is no big deal. It is much different during hockey season where you will want bulk of trains arriving between 6 and 6:45 when Jamaica is extremely crowded with eastbound peak trains filled with commuters. Imagine holding up all those riders so one train destined for Belmont can cross 4 tracks to access the current layout. That doesn’t account for trains held behind them further impacting service because you only have so much space to hold a train.

Belmont Park Station/Junction

I agree. That whole junction should be rebuilt with a new bridge capable of holding two tracks and flyovers so trains coming from east of and going to points west of Belmont Park would be able to reach such without having to cross over all of the other tracks to do it. That would more easily allow the existing Belmont Park station to be used not only for the new arena, but also as a park-and-ride and as I think will eventually happen also a Casino being added there.

Any train going to the current Belmont Race Track station has to be an extra train because the tracks end in a bumper block.

For example, it's not like you can have a Ronkonkoma train come in to Belmont, back out, then continue to Ronkonkoma. And coming from Ronkonkoma it would have to cross over all 4 tracks.

They only run two race specials each way each racing day except for Belmont Stakes day, so that doesn't significantly affect the regular service.

Don't count on the casino or racino. I was driving back from Pennsylvania on Sunday night and had hoped to stop at Monticello Raceway for a few minutes when I discovered that the racino has been permanently closed. It might have been a good place for Nassau OTB's casino, but the politicians wimped out and transferred those 1,000 machines to Resorts World in Queens.

I'd like to see a flying junction there too, but this one isn't about creating jobs or making things more efficient; it's more about maximizing noise at minimum cost.
