MetroCard question

Posted by gbs on Sun May 19 20:05:24 2019

Just when it seemed like all possible MetroCard questions have been asked and answered....

I've been refilling my current card with 30-day periods for almost a year, and the card expires at the end of this month. Meanwhile, the current 30-day period expired today. I tried to refill it at the MVM today, expecting the machine to tell me that the card is expiring soon, and to ask if I wanted to exchange it for a new one (which I did).

Instead the MVM told me that the card is expiring in 12 days and is not eligible for refill. How can I turn this card in and get a new 30-day unlimited one without paying the $1 fee? (Why wouldn't the MVM allow me to add 7 days? It never let me get that far.)

It should have asked you if you wanted a new one.

You may need to go to a station attendant.

Did it kick back the error when you hit 30 day card? Did you try to ask for a 7 day card?

I think it expect you to load PPR fares on and use it till it expires that way.

Go to the station agent to renew the card. If you can't use cash you will have to mail it in as defective and yes pay the $1 to get a card while you wait.

I know what you mean. There definitely seems to have recently been a change made to the refill/expiration messages/operations on the MVMs and/or MEMs for cards close to expiration.

I couldn't get that far. As soon as I chose "Refill your card" I got the message saying the card was ineligible for refill and it returned the card. I didn't get the choice to add time or money, nor the choice of time.

It might "replace" the card once it is actually expired.
