Tuscarora Almanac - April 22, 1964 - The Book of First Runs

Flushing, New York
New York City Transit Authority
IRT Division and IND Division

This is opening day for the 1964 Season of the New York World's Fair at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens.

The New York City Transit Authority begins operation of the No. 7 World's Fair Special running between Times Square and the World's Fair (Willets Point) Station. The specials carry regular signs but stop only at 5th Avenue and Grand Central.
The specials leave from Times Square from about 10 AM to 3 PM on weekdays and from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM on weekends. The special leave the fair from about 9 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and 8 PM to 11 PM on weekends.

The NYCTA also begins operation of a train on the IND Crosstown Line running non-stop from Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street to Roosevelt Avenue on a half hourly headway from about 9:30 AM to 3 PM. Due to low ridership this was cut to two morning trains on May 7 and discontinued about a week later.

The Long Island Railroad began operation of the World's Fair Special running non-stop between Pennsylvania Station and the World's Fair. The cost for this service was fifty cents and used a special token deposited in turnstiles at the World's Fair.

The LIRR also began running a second service from Jamaica Station to the World's Fair using coaches with an engine on each end and reversing east of Woodside. This service ran midday and evenings.

(N.B. If anyone has more detailed information on the LIRR fare collection procedures at Penn Station or the Jamaica - World's Fair train would you please let me know and I will include it in The Almanac.)

Sources: My own records and the NYD Bulletin for June 1964.

Additional Info provided by Mr. Andy Sparberg ; Jamaica - World's Fair shuttle did not use diesel engines but was a conventional MU electric train with two engineers, one at each end. The train reversed direction at the now-vanished WIN Interlocking (where the Port Wash and Main Line diverge east of Woodside, atop Queens Blvd.). The operation was a headache and was not replicated for the Fair's 1965 season. Passengers between branches east of Jamaica and World's Fair transferred to Port Washington Branch trains at Woodside, much like today's travelers to/from Citi Field and the Tennis Center. I believe that additional Penn-World's Fair shuttles were provided with a Woodside stop, to accommodate the Fair travelers.

Did the GGs reverse using the switch to the east of the station or run light to Jamaica Yard?
Thanks.

I honestly don't know. It was over 50 years ago. They probably turned for regular "GG" service.

Ah, the World's Fair. My parents and I went there in the spring of 1964 (I know it was the spring because we were still livng with my grandparents in East New York, near the Newlots Av IRT station, we would move into our own home in lower Crown Heights that July). We did not take the train, but a special express bus which we boarded at the eastbound B10 stop at Newlots Av/Ashfrod St. The bus was a brand new Flxible New Look (though I wouldn't know about Flxible until years later, but even at 5 years of age, I recognized that this bus was different than the Fishbowls and Old Looks that I was used to seeing).

My mother and I went to the Fair again in 1965, may have been near the end of its run. This time we took the train (3 from Sterling St on the Nostrand Line and changed to the World's Fair Express at Times Square). I think coming back we were on a local 7. The only thing I really remember from the Fair was the monorail. It was sponsored by sporting goods company AMF (you may recall the AMF logo on the nose of the monorail cars). At such a young age, I didn't know anything about sponsorship deals, so I thought that AMF actually built the monorail. Imagine my surprise years later, when I saw ads for AMF pool tables!

In all likelihood:

The use of Tokens for the special service on the World's Fair line likely was no different from the days you would buy tokens for the Belmont Special through 1987. No fares were collected on the trains in all likelihood and instead were simply collected at the fair using tokens (and later on at Belmont Park the same way).

We visited the Fair on July 20, 1965. We came in from Linden into what was left of old Penn Station and took the LIRR to the Fair. Although I remember most of the things we saw and did, I do not remember the monorail at all, even though we did venture down to the amusement area and took in the porpoise show at the Florida Pavilion.

AMF - American Machine and Foundry - was more than a sporting goods company, and more than a sponsor of the monorail. They were in a joint venture with the French firm SAFEGE to produce monorails.
