Tuscarora Almanac - April 22, 1964 - The Book of First Runs

This is opening day for the 1964 Season of the New York World's Fair at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens.

The New York City Transit Authority begins operation of the No. 7 World's Fair Special running between Times Square and the World's Fair (Willets Point) Station. The specials carry regular signs but stop only at 5th Avenue and Grand Central.
The specials leave from Times Square from about 10 AM to 3 PM on weekdays and from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM on weekends. The special leave the fair from about 9 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and 8 PM to 11 PM on weekends.

The NYCTA also begins operation of a train on the IND Crosstown Line running non-stop from Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street to Roosevelt Avenue on a half hourly headway from about 9:30 AM to 3 PM. Due to low ridership this was cut to two morning trains on May 7 and discontinued about a week later.

The Long Island Railroad began operation of the World's Fair Special running non-stop between Pennsylvania Station and the World's Fair. The cost for this service was fifty cents and used a special token deposited in turnstiles at the World's Fair.

The LIRR also began running a second service from Jamaica Station to the World's Fair using coaches with an engine on each end and reversing east of Woodside. This service ran midday and evenings.

(N.B. If anyone has more detailed information on the LIRR fare collection procedures at Penn Station or the Jamaica - World's Fair train would you please let me know and I will include it in The Almanac.)

Additional Info provided by Mr. Andy Sparberg ; Jamaica - World's Fair shuttle did not use diesel engines but was a conventional MU electric train with two engineers, one at each end. The train reversed direction at the now-vanished WIN Interlocking (where the Port Wash and Main Line diverge east of Woodside, atop Queens Blvd.). The operation was a headache and was not replicated for the Fair's 1965 season. Passengers between branches east of Jamaica and World's Fair transferred to Port Washington Branch trains at Woodside, much like today's travelers to/from Citi Field and the Tennis Center. I believe that additional Penn-World's Fair shuttles were provided with a Woodside stop, to accommodate the Fair travelers.
